Our Adult Literacy Program needs GED volunteer tutors ASAP! The highest-demand GED subjects at the moment are Math and Language Arts. Most of the tutor training would be on an online, self-paced platform. The time commitment is six months. Please get in touch with Rebecca Massey: 828-254-3442, Ext. #202 Our Adult Literacy program teaches reading, writing, and math to adults who read at or below a basic skills level. Our Adult Education program currently maintains an enrollment of approximately 50 students who work one-on-one with volunteer tutors. All tutors receive training in the proven Orton-Gillingham methodology-a phonics-based reading method-and use the Wilson Reading System curriculum. Although English is their native language, Adult Literacy students are non-readers who struggle with recognizing individual written words and comprehending a sentence or longer passage. They comprise a diverse group in terms of educational background, socio-economic status, personal goals, and learning styles. Many are challenged by learning disabilities such as dyslexia. They come to us to improve their job prospects, help their children in school, enroll in a GED program, or just feel better about themselves and their ability to cope. I am excited to contribute to developing children’s literary skills, as I am passionate about literature. ~ Lauren "I was surprised to learn about the number of people in Buncombe County who cannot read." Carol "I was surprised by many of the statistics about literacy rates and had not considered just how strongly literacy is linked to poverty and family history. All the more eager to help!" ~Karen "The statistics shown were very important, especially about gaps in literacy levels between black and white students." ~ Nadia " I did not know that you could volunteer internationally. That is great!" ~ Eric
