Job Description: General Description: This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, law enforcement, and security operations, linking those in need of assistance to those who render assistance. The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules and duties dependent on the needs of the department and/or staff professional development.
Duties and Tasks:
Dispatcher position is responsible for the public safety at a multi-campus college. The dispatcher is often the responsible entity for receiving calls for service and dispatch resources, making appropriate notifications. Operate police/emergency communications equipment in accordance with existing guidelines. Process requests for service by telephone and in person. Maintain computerized daily communications logs. This position requires working rotating shifts and is designated as "essential" which requires reporting for duty during holidays and times when the College is closed due to inclement weather or other events Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to successfully complete initial DCJS approved dispatcher/communications training Ability to successfully complete department field training Ability to acquire and maintain NCIC/VCIN Level A operator certification Ability to successfully complete department required or DCJS required in-service training Ability to follow instructions and perform with minimum supervision Ability to understand and speak English clearly Excellent oral (no speech limitations) and written communication skills Ability to multi-task various job functions Ability to handle stress under emergency situations Good computer skill Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute Ability to successfully complete the written telecommunicator assessment Minimum Work Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Successfully pass a telecommunications assessment Must be 18 years of age or older Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.
