Trail Blazers Camps
In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from New York City to the Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, Connecticut. Since that first summer, thousands of children and teens have participated in Trail Blazers’s nature-based summer camp and after-school programs in New York and New Jersey. Our play-based programs are designed with social emotional learning at the forefront, and focus on environmental science, experiential learning, and outdoor adventures.
Summary of Position
The Wellness Director is an integral member of the leadership team at Trail Blazers’s Overnight Camp in Montague, New Jersey. In collaboration with the Camp Director, they are responsible for ensuring adherence to high standards of health and safety in accordance with New Jersey State regulations and the American Camping Association, implementing the camp health care plan, and providing health and wellness guidance to children and staff member. This is a seasonal, full time, exempt position that runs June - August.
Essential Functions
Provide urgent and non-urgent medical treatment
to campers and staff
Provide health center open call hours for staff and campers and be available for emergencies
Administer medication to campers and create administration schedule
Treat minor injuries and illnesses and implement standing orders under a physician’s direction
Assess camper and staff injuries and illnesses and determine necessity of additional medical attention (i.e. urgent care or emergency room visit;
Accompany campers as necessary
Communicate with parents regarding any medical questions or concerns as well as to provide information on any emergency treatment
Manage all health center operations
Setting up the health center for the start of camp, reviewing camper health forms and standing orders, and ordering any needed medical supplies
Maintain detailed medical records and notes entering data in a timely and accurate manner; Ensure that camper and staff medical records and information are kept confidential
Maintain medical supplies inventory and restock first aid kits on an ongoing basis
Ensure the security of medication
Keep medical office and sleeping areas clean
Leadership Team
Work closely with the Camp Director and leadership team to provide a healthy and safe experience for all campers and staff
Provide training to camp staff on health center procedures, camper first aid expectations, and camper well-being
Actively participate in camp life by attending and assisting with evening programs and special events as requested by the Camp Director
Compensation/ Benefits
This is a full time, seasonal, exempt position
Salary is based on schedule and experience, starting at $1,000 per 6-day week
The Wellness Director lives in the Health Center in a private room with a shared bathroom and kitchen and access to wifi.
