Overview

The Associate Director of Sport Psychology & Scholar-Athlete Mental Health Programs supports the mission of CAPS, Intercollegiate Athletics, and the University in providing high-quality mental health and mental performance services for UC San Diego scholar-athletes. The incumbent works with Athletics leadership to address scholar-athlete mental health and performance, including participation on committees, training, and ongoing consultation with Athletics staff. This role directs CAPS sport psychology and mental health services for scholar-athletes, overseeing a team of professionals providing mental health and performance support through individual and group interventions, trainings, and coach consultations. Provides a range of clinical and program management responsibilities, including assessment, crisis management, outreach, education, case management, and connection to community resources. Responsibilities include supervision and administrative oversight of CAPS sport psychology and mental health professionals, post-doctoral residents, and unlicensed trainees/staff in the Athletics Department. Responsibilities

Directs a team delivering mental health and performance support to scholar-athlete populations through individual and group interventions, trainings, and coach consultations.

Train and supervise CAPS staff in new areas of development within a student development context; refine CAPS services to incorporate new methodologies in sport and performance psychology.

Consult with campus departments, faculty, staff, and administrators to support scholar-athletes with mental health conditions.

Participate in the selection, hiring, onboarding, and performance management of CAPS sport psychology and mental health professionals, post-doctoral residents, and unlicensed trainees designated to the Athletics Department.

Deliver short-term, high-quality, culturally affirming mental health services; provide crisis management, outreach, prevention, education, and connections to community resources tailored to scholar-athletes.

Collaborate with Intercollegiate Athletics leadership on committees and ongoing program development related to scholar-athlete mental health and performance.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed with the Board of Psychology.

Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Experience and expertise in the practice of Sport Psychology with advanced knowledge of mental health and performance of scholar athletes, including factors affecting university students.

Strong knowledge of behavioral health counseling methods, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and case management; experience with brief, intermittent, and focused psychotherapy and group counseling.

Supervisory experience to guide PhD behavioral health providers; proficiency in clinical supervision and organizational consulting.

Strong knowledge of applicable laws and ethics governing psychology; ability to maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to work with diverse student leaders and stakeholders; capacity to develop culturally proficient outreach and education programs.

Working knowledge of human resources practices and CAPS policies; familiarity with risk management, quality improvement, and marketing of services.

Proficiency with business software, EHR systems, and standard office tools; ability to learn new systems as needed.

Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines in a complex environment, and organize operations efficiently.

Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive campus climate and ability to collaborate with a diverse student and staff population.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and FERPA requirements.

Professionalism aligned with UCSD Principles of Community and Health System standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Board Certification in Sports Psychology or certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant.

Experience working with university scholar-athletes and athletic departments.

Special Conditions

Employment subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Initial credential verification and re-credentialing every 3 years.

TB screening, annual flu vaccination, and COVID vaccination or approved exemption required.

Occasional travel; may include nights and weekends; on-campus work with possible telecommuting as needed.

Electronic medical records training (EPIC) provided and required upon hire.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $108,100 - $204,900 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $51.77 - $98.13 Salary is determined by experience, skills, education, licensure, and other needs.
