Responsibilities The incumbent supports the mission of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and collaborates with Intercollegiate Athletics and the University to provide high-quality mental health and mental performance services for UC San Diego scholar-athletes.Key duties include:
Directs a team of professionals delivering mental health and performance support to teams through individual and group interventions, trainings, and coach consultations.
Trains and updates CAPS clinical staff in new areas of development within a student development context; refines CAPS services with evolving sport and performance psychology methodologies.
Consults with campus departments, faculty, staff, and administrators to assist scholar-athletes with mental health conditions.
Oversees delivery of short-term, high-quality, culturally affirming mental health services for a wide range of cases, including assessment, therapy (group and individual), crisis management, outreach, prevention, and education for scholar-athletes.
Coordinates scholar-athlete mental health services through CAPS and oversees scholar-athlete mental performance services.
Participates in hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management of CAPS sport psychology and mental health professionals, post-doctoral residents, and unlicensed trainees/staff for the Athletics Department.
Minimum Qualifications
Licensed with the Board of Psychology.
BLS required.
Experience and expertise in the practice of Sport Psychology; advanced knowledge in mental health and performance of scholar athletes, including literature related to retention, academic success, college age development, well-being, and related fields.
Strong knowledge of behavioral health counseling methods, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and case management; experience with brief, intermittent, and focused psychotherapy and group counseling.
Supervisory experience guiding PhD behavioral health providers; skills in clinical supervision and organizational consulting.
Knowledge of applicable laws and ethics governing psychology; ability to stay current with regulations.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication; ability to work with student leaders and diverse campus stakeholders; culturally proficient outreach and consultation skills.
Working knowledge of CAPS policies, procedures, and standards for consultation, brief therapy, referrals, risk management, quality improvement, marketing.
Proficiency with business software, EHR systems, and standard office software; ability to adapt to new technologies.
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and organize operations efficiently; commitment to a positive, inclusive campus climate.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and FERPA; discretion in handling sensitive information.
Professionalism and adherence to UCSD Principles of Community and Health System standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Board Certification in Sports Psychology or certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant.
Experience working with university scholar-athletes and athletic departments.
Special Conditions
Employment subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Initial credential verification and subsequent re-credentialing every 3 years.
TB screening following COEM schedule; annual flu vaccination; COVID vaccination or approved exemption.
Occasional business travel; may include nights and weekends; on-campus work with possible telecommuting as needed.
Electronic medical records training (EPIC) required upon hire.
