ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a Principal Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (SPRA) Engineer to work with the Seismic Integration and Risk Assessment teams. This role focuses on oversight and production of SPRA and severe accident analysis for the reactor design. The engineer will perform, direct, oversee, and accept SPRA work in coordination with deterministic safety analysis, fragility, and other engineering disciplines. Additionally, the engineer will use SPRA models to provide risk information such as importance measures and risk metrics to inform design and licensing decisions.
Other engineering activities include contributing to methodologies and models for a Risk Informed, Performance Based approach to seismic design, participating in hazard analysis groups, Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table exercises, and involvement in Structures, Systems, and Components classification, Licensing Basis Events selection, and Defense-in-Depth evaluations. This role requires sound written and verbal communication skills for interacting with various groups via interviews, emails, and meetings to develop risk models.
This position requires an understanding of SPRA principles, familiarity with the ASME/ANS PRA standard, and the Licensing Modernization Project. Knowledge of sodium fast reactor technology is preferred but can be obtained on the job through in-house training workshops.
Responsibilities:
Manage SPRA work in coordination with plant design, deterministic safety analysis, and other disciplines.
Ensure SPRA aligns with reactor design and regulatory requirements, including guidelines such as RG 1.233, NEI 18-04, and the ASME/ANS Non-Light Water PRA standard.
Lead the development of plans and schedules for SPRA activities.
Provide technical guidance on reliability and SPRA-related topics.
Participate in SPRA peer reviews.
Review and develop event and fault trees for SPRA models.
Work with an interdisciplinary team to establish core and reactor functional, reliability, performance, safety, and quality requirements.
Maintain documentation of model development and analysis.
Perform engineering reviews and develop containment fault and event trees using CAFTA.
Group similar source terms for event sequence end states.
Perform risk integration using PRA models to report risk metrics and importance measures.
Perform focused PRA analysis to support trade studies.
Conduct hand calculations to validate models for system and radiological performance.
Prepare topical reports on PRA methods and results for customers and regulators.
Deliver presentations to internal management and external customers.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
B.S., M.S., or PhD in nuclear, mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering (or similar).
Fifteen years or more of experience in Probabilistic Risk Assessment.
In-depth knowledge of PRA principles and the ASME/ANS Non-Light Water PRA standard.
In-depth knowledge of risk-informed performance-based regulations and applications.
In-depth knowledge of PRA fundamentals including data, human reliability, accident analysis, severe accidents, and source terms assessments.
Experience with PRA software, particularly CAFTA, SAPHIRE, or Risk Spectrum.
Experience using tools like GOTHIC, MELCOR, or RADTRAD is a plus.
Strong technical writing and communication skills.
Experience with sodium-cooled reactors or advanced reactors preferred.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Broad understanding of engineering disciplines related to Nuclear Power Plant design.
