We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Outpatient Laboratory Supervisor. In this role, the successful candidate provides technical information, coordination and direction to Phlebotomy staff, who collect blood and urine specimens, and Intake staff, who register patients and enter orders for lab tests into Epic in the Outpatient Laboratory (OPL). These functions provide the pre-analytical phase of testing for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The role participates in and facilitates the management of the operational, personnel and financial activities of the department, in accordance with applicable laws, NYU Langone Health policies, procedures and standards. Job Responsibilities
Financial Management Manages assigned operational and capital budgets according to hospital guidelines. Collaborates with Laboratory manager to meet financial targets. Reviews Laboratory section's monthly reports and completes required documentation as requested. Manages and monitors the testing menu to ensure accurate test order entry and proper specimen collection. Observes Joint Commission standards, Patient Safety Initiatives, Patient Rights and HIPAA Privacy Standards. Adheres to care, documentation and cleanliness standards; completes in-services and continuing education; maintains patient safety; communicates with the department director as required; collaborates with team members to benefit the patient; maintains patient privacy. Adheres to Joint Commission and NYULMC Patient Rights standards. Human Resources Management Oversees personnel management of staff in the assigned laboratory section, including interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating, promoting and terminating employees. Addresses personnel issues timely and equitably; collaborates with Human Resources to complete paperwork. Laboratory Technical Management Serves as a technical resource and guides troubleshooting of computer, printer and interface problems; provides staff training on patient care processes. Ensures regulatory requirements are fulfilled when test menus change; leads evaluation of new procedures and equipment; coordinates equipment repairs with staff. Customer Service Maintains department service standards; ensures turnaround times are met; supports external departments as needed. Quality Assurance/Regulatory/Safety Completes competency assessments, proficiency tests and quality control activities; reviews daily specimen quality reports; creates and revises SOPs; coordinates with regulatory agencies as needed. Leads inspection processes and responds to regulatory requests; ensures safety, including proper temperature monitoring, eyewash stations, cleanliness and hazardous waste handling. Ensures staff safety policies and the use of protective equipment to prevent exposure to infectious agents. Laboratory Operations Management Assigns staff to registrations and phlebotomy tasks; reviews data entry and specimen labeling for timeliness and accuracy; performs other duties as appropriate. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree Phlebotomy training and certification required Three to five years of laboratory experience, including one year in a supervisory/management role Experience in an acute care hospital or health care facility preferred Strong knowledge of laboratory operations Ability to set priorities and work under stress Calm and tactful when resolving issues with staff, patients, visitors, or vendors Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills Flexible and adaptable to changing conditions Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an acute care hospital or health care facility is preferred Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
