Highlands School is a vibrant leader in independent education in the Birmingham metropolitan region. Highlands Schools whole-child focused academic program guided by a comprehensive emphasis on physical, social-emotional, creative and intellectual development educates and inspires students in preschool through 8th grade. The School was founded in 1958 and holds dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and Cognia.
Position Overview: Highlands School is seeking a dynamic and experienced Athletic Director to lead our athletic programs and oversee all aspects of the schools sports programs. The Director is responsible for the implementation of a robust and active multi-sport athletics program benefitting all students in our 4K-8th grade school. The position is a Part-Time position. As our teams practice and compete after school and on weekends, the position includes corresponding hours and responsibilities. The Athletic Director reports to the Director of Student Services and the Head of School.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct the interscholastic athletic program in accordance with Highlands Schools mission, philosophy, and goals.
Increase student participation in current Highlands School athletic offerings as well as implement new sports programs.
Be the spokesperson and representative of Highlands School athletics to ensure clear and open lines of communication to parents, students, fans, and the general public.
Lead Highlands School coaching program:
Determine coaching needs and assignments. Hire and evaluate coaches; recruit and provide training to volunteer coaches. Maintain high standards for the program through professional development of coaches and staff. Be a coach of coaches. Mentor all new coaches and support and aid all coaches in their daily tasks. Schedule and conduct coaches meetings as necessary.
Schedule interscholastic competition with direct assistance from the coaches and respective athletic leagues. Provide timely, consistent communication regarding school sports, schedules, changes, etc. to parents, coaches, students, faculty/staff. Oversee athletic awards, banquets, and ceremonies and maintain historical records of individual players and teams. Provide general supervision of athletic events and contests, and either serve as or designate the school representative at events. Develop and maintain the athletic budget. Develop and implement athletic policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with AHSAA requirements and guidelines and serve as the Schools designated administrative representative to the Association. Serve as a member of the Highlands School Administrative Team and Facilities Use Committee Oversee the maintenance and inventory of equipment required for the athletic department. Coordinate the upkeep and set-up of all facilities in conjunction with the Facilities Department. Support school administration in disciplinary matters as needed. Provide a safe playing environment in conjunction with head coaches. Be responsible for all game contracts. Pursue professional development for self and coaches through membership in professional organizations, clinic/conference attendance, and course participation. Preferred Qualities and Qualifications: Bachelors degree in athletic administration, physical education, or a related disciple. At least 2-3 years of teaching experience in physical education and/or coaching. Successful track record working with student athletes, coaches, and parents. Direct experience playing or coaching one or more of our current athletic offerings: basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, cheerleading. High energy and enthusiasm about leading the Highlands School athletic program. Ability to expand current athletic sport offerings, generate enthusiasm from school constituents, and implement successful launch of new athletic opportunities. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, possessing initiative, drive, flexibility, responsiveness, and nimbleness. Outstanding communication skills, with a professional and empathetic approach Excellent organizational skills Goals oriented and results driven Experience in handling athletic conflicts and challenges, seeking to be proactive and solutions driven.
