Sierra7, Inc. is seeking an experienced Principal Senior Software Engineer to provide technical leadership and advanced engineering expertise for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veteran Experience Services (VES) Eligibility and Enrollment 2.0 program initiative. This role will serve as a lead engineer and hands-on developer, guiding design decisions, mentoring engineering teams, and ensuring delivery of secure, scalable, and reliable solutions. The engineer will collaborate closely with product owners, architects, DevSecOps engineers, and QA teams to build high-quality, mission-critical systems that improve Veteran access to benefits and services.
This position is hybrid. It is primarily remote with occasional commuting to client locations in the DC/VA/MD area.
Position Responsibilities :
• Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex software solutions supporting E&E 2.0. • Serve as a technical authority and mentor for development teams, providing guidance on architecture, design patterns, and best practices. • Collaborate with program architects to ensure solutions align with VA enterprise standards, security policies, and modernization strategies. • Write, review, and optimize high-quality, maintainable, and secure code across multiple programming languages and frameworks. • Drive the integration of software components into CI/CD DevSecOps pipelines, ensuring automated builds, testing, and deployments. • Support system performance tuning, scalability, and resilience engineering. • Conduct code reviews, technical reviews, and architecture/design walkthroughs. • Ensure compliance with federal cybersecurity, accessibility, and interoperability standards. • Provide technical input to release planning, backlog prioritization, and risk/issue management. • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations for adoption where applicable to enhance program outcomes and customer satisfaction. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• Expertise in one or more enterprise-grade programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, .NET, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot). • Hands-on experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud-native architectures. • Strong knowledge of DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automation frameworks. • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) • Deep understanding of secure coding practices, vulnerability mitigation, and federal security standards (e.g., NIST, FedRAMP). • Proven ability to lead technical teams and mentor junior developers. • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. • Knowledge of healthcare IT interoperability standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR). • Familiarity with 508 Compliance, desired • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, over video conferencing, and by phone. • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal healthcare/benefits programs, preferred. • The ability to operate in a high stress environment. • Must be able to obtain government public trust. • Occasional travel may be required to government sites or for stakeholder meetings.
Education & Experience :
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or related field - (8 years' experience and/or a relevant certification may be considered in lieu of degree) • 3-5 years of progressive software engineering experience in software engineering, with 1-2 years in a principal or senior technical leadership role. • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other large federal health/benefits programs, preferred. • Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, Kubernetes CKA/CKAD, SAFe Practitioner, or equivalent, a strong plus.
