Overview The University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Senior Marketing and Digital Media Manager in the Journals Division Marketing department. This role leads strategic marketing activities for a portfolio of more than 20 academic journals and oversees non-editorial digital media channels, including social media and the Journals Division website, while managing a student worker.
Responsibilities
Develop and execute more than 20 journal marketing plans annually, with guidance from the Associate Marketing Director
Collaborate with publishers, journal office partners, and the Associate Marketing Director to identify a journal's communications needs (e.g., driving submissions, increasing usage, improving circulation, or earning publicity)
Recommend and implement effective marketing strategies to achieve a journal's communications goals
Manage journal marketing budgets, including allocation submission and timely reconciliation
Manage journal-specific publicity activities (hiring freelance writers, article recommendations, press release distribution, media list maintenance)
Plan representation at conferences to reach appropriate academic audiences
Travel to and represent the Journals Division and the Press at academic conference exhibits
Coordinate with the Senior Marketing Analyst to report on key marketing metrics and activities for ad hoc and annual reports
Manage external print, design, and promotional vendors to ensure timely and accurate delivery of marketing material
Collaborate with the Books Division to implement cross-promotional activities
Perform web updates using a content management system or basic HTML
Complete basic graphic design tasks for marketing material updates
Create and distribute mass marketing emails
Plan and support events and receptions
Provide leadership for the Division's social media presence, including posting schedules, performance reporting, selecting social media software, and developing guides for publishing partners
Maintain web updates for the Journals Division's non-editorial content webpages, including building new sites, troubleshooting, and managing site tickets with the vendor
Manage a student worker
Develop one or more marketing functions (marketing communications/advertising, web blogs/digital marketing, market research) and review/update marketing infrastructure
May assist in managing relationships with external sales agencies
May participate in developing new products/services and determining new markets; train lower-level marketing staff; may attend trade shows
Performs other related work as needed
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree or related field; minimum five years of related experience in marketing or scholarly publications or higher education
Experience: 5+ years in related marketing roles; experience in marketing scholarly publications or higher education preferred
Technical Knowledge/Skills: Microsoft Office; budget management; social media marketing; email marketing; intermediate web editing (HTML, WYSIWYG, CSS); intermediate graphic design; familiarity with databases, word processing, and spreadsheets
Preferred Competencies: Excellent verbal and written communication; creativity; interpersonal skills; attention to detail; organizational skills; ability to work quickly and independently; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines; travel capability; ability to handle stressful situations; professional representation of the organization
