Overview
The Department Otolaryngology is seeking a Patient Service Coordinator/Medical Assistant who will work in an outpatient setting and have responsibilities related to patient care and the clinic environment. Time will be split .75FTE as a Medical Assistant and .25FTE as a Patient Service Coordinator in the Johns Hopkins Oto clinic. The position is centralized and will work across specialty centers to ensure optimum flow and customer service within the clinic. Provides exemplary customer service to patients, physicians and internal customers to aid in meeting patient satisfaction goals of the department. Responsibilities
Patient Service Coordinator Responsibilities: Contributes to smooth clinic operation by directing patient flow, monitoring patient registration volume, room placement and checkout; ensures patients are placed in rooms on time. Provide cross coverage for the full-time MA and PSC (registration); perform patient check-in/check-out when needed. Contact patients to reschedule appointments, provide exceptional customer service, and coordinate between rescheduled appointments and clinic operations. Assist in managing the clinic\'s scheduling system to identify open slots, resolve scheduling conflicts, and update patient records accurately. Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance information, and prepare daily schedules for designated areas. Obtain and/or verify patient demographic data; obtain pre-certifications as required by insurers. Proficient in verifying insurance benefits, processing authorizations, and addressing related inquiries; registers patients for clinical appointments using EMR. Assist patients and families with completing medical insurance forms; inform patients of costs and guide them to resources; arrange transportation as needed. Handle payments, issue receipts, and enter charges; discuss charges with patients/families as appropriate. Evaluate eligibility for alternative financing sources and provide support for financial counseling when needed. Telemedicine triage as needed and cover duties as required in the absence of regular personnel. Medical Assistant Responsibilities: Obtain and record vital signs; assist patients to exam rooms and prepare for examinations or procedures. Prepare examination or treatment areas; assist with medical records preparation; follow aseptic technique and infection control. Operate clinical equipment, perform phlebotomy when necessary, and assist with endoscopic equipment reprocessing and sterilization per standards. Maintain sterilization records and operate sterilization equipment; collect and process specimens per SOPs; recognize emergencies and administer basic first aid including CPR. Maintain exam rooms with supplies; assist patients with transfers; manage instrument processing and decontamination; support prescription refills and clinical errands as needed. Collaborate with the care team to resolve daily room assignments and clinic flow issues; participate in telemedicine triage when required. May assume responsibilities of a primary Medical Assistant or Patient Service Coordinator in the absence of regularly assigned personnel. Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED and certification/registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required; if not certified, must become certified within 120 days of hire. One year of work experience in customer service; current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during employment. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education as permitted by Johns Hopkins equivalency guidelines.
