Associate Dean for Academic Affairs - College of Nursing
Location: UMass Amherst | Work type: Faculty Full Time | Department: Dean - College of Nursing | Union: Non-Unit Exempt
The College of Nursing seeks a visionary and dynamic Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) to provide strategic academic leadership and foster innovation in nursing education. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative faculty position reporting to the Dean. The ADAA will be a creative nurse leader with a strong record of academic scholarship and leadership in higher education.
The ADAA will lead the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, coordinating all aspects of the nursing programs in the College of Nursing, and serve as a role model in innovation, collaboration, and consensus-building across diverse groups. The ADAA serves as the Academic Officer for the College of Nursing, providing leadership and strategic guidance to program directors and faculty in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of our Nursing and Wellness curricula from baccalaureate to doctoral programs. This role oversees student education, services, and learning resources and coordinates with central campus resources to ensure effective operations aligned with the College’s vision, mission, and strategic plan.
Essential Functions
Teaching (10%)
Develops and prepares course syllabi, learning objectives, assignments, and provides feedback
Selects and guides learning experiences to achieve desired outcomes
Oversees and guides the evaluation process of students
Creates teaching materials as needed
Teaches courses within baccalaureate and graduate programs as needed
Collaborates with other faculty in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating teaching/learning strategies and curricula
Recommends new instructional and educational research techniques from conferences and self-development
Provides guidance to faculty and advisement of students; available to students for advising by appointment
College of Nursing Administration (70%)
Coordinate and administer all academic programs and matters related to faculty, students, scheduling, curriculum implementation, advising, clinical placement, graduate student appointments, academic standards, student issues, and teaching needs
Collaborate with the Dean’s Office on faculty course reductions for funded scholarship, service, or administrative appointments; oversee undergraduate and graduate academic programs and ensure quality of degree-granting educational programs
Foster academic excellence, ensure accreditation compliance, and prepare administrative external reports and surveys
Develop and maintain annual position descriptions and/or academic year plans with faculty and program directors; manage RN hires and mentorships to ensure compliance with the Board of Registration in Nursing
Lead development of timely teaching schedules, clinical placements, and lab experiences to support student success
Provide direct supervision for up to five staff members
Service for the Achievement of College Goals (10%)
Participate in College and University meetings, College Faculty Assembly, and annual retreats; contribute to evaluation of graduate and undergraduate programs
Represent the College at orientation, registration, and graduation activities; identify resource needs and changes
Recruit and select full-time faculty; lead recruitment of part-time non-benefitted faculty
Engage in prospective nursing student recruitment activities
Develop, recommend, implement, and evaluate academic policies/procedures; resolve issues
Advance the mission and goals of the College and University
Scholarship (10%)
Engage in an active program of scholarship
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure) The successful candidate will have administrative experience in a nursing school with both undergraduate and graduate programs. The ADAA will provide strategic direction and leadership in realizing the College’s vision, identify areas for growth, enhance its academic and research portfolio, and improve student experience.
Earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution; master’s degree in nursing; record appropriate for appointment as Associate Professor or higher
Academic administrative experience commensurate with a senior appointment in a research-intensive university
Massachusetts RN license required by time of appointment and must be maintained in good standing
Extensive nursing faculty experience, preferably within the past 2–3 years
Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff; inspire trust and build morale
Proven leadership, energy, decisiveness, and willingness to take calculated risks
Ability to lead and innovate in a large, complex organization
Understanding of online/distance education and emerging technologies in support of programs
Team-oriented; ability to work with University administration and industry leaders to maintain program excellence
Experience with recruitment and retention of qualified and diverse faculty and students
Experience integrating programs with high-impact practices and experiential learning
Experience managing metrics for continuous quality improvement in academic outcomes
Understanding of student success, enrollment management, and academic advising
Experience building a global profile of a college/program via international and study abroad programs
Proficiency with online teaching platforms and basic IT applications
Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
Additional Details
Advanced practice and/or other specialty certifications desirable
National certification as Nurse Educator preferred
Work Schedule May include some nights and weekends; office accommodation and equipment provided.
Salary Information Salary commensurate with education, experience, and certifications with an administrative stipend. Travel to clinical sites outside of normal schedule is reimbursable; commuting travel on regular workdays is not.
