Compass Government Solutions is seeking an

Apheresis/Donor Center Phlebotomist

to provide services at the

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC)

in Bethesda, MD. An Apheresis/Donor Center Phlebotomist performs apheresis procedures to collect specific blood components (like platelets or plasma) from donors. Schedule:

Monday - Friday (Excluding Holidays and Government Closings). Primary operating hours for WRNMMC and The Pentagon: 5 AM - 3:30 PM. Mobile Blood Drives at Naval Academy are scheduled later with core hours from 11 AM to 9 PM. Phlebotomists will be assigned to the Donor Center (ASBBC-NCR) and will service WRNMMC, the Pentagon, or Mobile Blood Drives throughout the National Capital Region and beyond 40 miles to other military and federal installations (e.g., Dover AFB, DE; Carlisle Barracks, PA; NSF Dahlgren, VA; NAS Patuxent River, MD; Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD; Fort Indiantown Gap, PA). Phlebotomists will train and work in all three areas of operation as requested. Transportation may be provided by the government or Phlebotomists may drive their own vehicle at no cost to the government.

Responsibilities

Report to the Director of the ASBBC. Participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities to enhance health services.

Properly identify and label specimens; maintain sanitary standards; select and implement proper, age-appropriate collection techniques; ensure samples are prepared for laboratory analysis; send specimens to correct testing locations; update patient/donor records.

Adhere to SOP guidelines and all established federal, DoD, Navy, WRNMMC and department safety and occupational health guidelines and requirements.

Ensure compliance with standard of care and practice in accordance with all policies, procedures, and JC guidelines. Provide care within ethical and legal boundaries.

Complete orientation and competency verification programs; participate in committees and meetings; assist with decision-making and process improvement; may serve as a preceptor for Medical Laboratory Technician programs.

Participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities as required.

Additional Duties for the Donor Center Mobile Drive Team

Perform blood donor health screening and donor qualification procedures per FDA, AABB, Navy Blood Program, and CAP guidelines. Include vital signs assessment and hemoglobin/hematocrit determinations.

Perform venipuncture site selection and venipuncture in accordance with ASBBC SOPs and governing agencies.

Recognize adverse donor reactions and respond promptly; manage reactions from mild to severe.

Perform preventive maintenance for equipment used on mobile blood drives; monitor equipment alarms during collection.

Assist in evaluating and implementing new procedures; document donor procedures and results in the Enterprise Blood Management Systems.

Instruct newly assigned technologists and technicians; assist with supply inventory and tracking; ensure universal precautions and PPE usage.

Assist with packing, setup, and breakdown of mobile drive equipment and be able to move/light lifting up to 40 lbs.

Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements (FDA, CLIA, NBPO, JCAHO, AABB, CAP) for apheresis and blood banking to ensure compliant work practices.

Knowledge of donor reactions for safety and emergency procedures per BLS protocols.

Additional Duties at WRNMMC and Pentagon site

Perform advanced technical procedures in the Apheresis Section and assist Blood Mobile Operations.

Perform autologous, therapeutic, allogeneic and apheresis collections; assist with plasma exchanges and white cell depletion procedures.

Operate and monitor specialized apheresis equipment; set up and respond to alarms to ensure patient safety and product quality.

Perform preventive maintenance on apheresis equipment and related instrumentation.

Instruct technologists and technicians on new methods and procedures within the Apheresis Section.

Manage Apheresis supply inventory and records; ensure adequate donor supplies and documentation.

Demonstrate professional knowledge of apheresis principles; troubleshoot instrumentation and computer failures.

Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ phlebotomy experience (most preferred) or 12 months whole blood phlebotomy in the prior 24 months or completion of an apheresis training program.

Education: Graduation from an accredited program leading to ASCP, HHS, or AMCert certification (preferred); or equivalent degree/certificate; or 12 months of apheresis technician experience within the past 24 months.

Certifications: Basic Life Support; ASCP certification; HHS/AMCert; degree or certificate from an approved/accredited training program.

Knowledge: Proficiency with basic computer operations, data entry, and electronic medical records. Ability to communicate with nurses, medical staff, patients, and families.

Additional: Working knowledge of military culture, customs, and procedures; ability to provide outstanding customer service; color vision ability per testing requirements.
