Overview Director, Rutgers Animal Care — Office for Research, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. This role oversees the laboratory animal care and use program across multiple campuses and drives strategic collaboration with stakeholders to advance research and animal care standards.

Base pay range $190,059.00/yr - $190,059.00/yr

Responsibilities

Oversees and administers the laboratory animal care and use program in accordance with institutional policies, animal welfare laws, granting agency requirements, and AAALAC International standards.

Manages veterinary care and husbandry activities at multiple sites across Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Camden campuses.

Oversees scientific animal endeavors and veterinary care of research animals.

Serves on Rutgers Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) on each campus.

Provides oversight of the University’s Veterinary Residency Program.

Partners with key stakeholders to align strategies and drive business outcomes.

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and a license to practice in at least one state.

Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).

Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in laboratory animal medicine, including institutional veterinary research (academic, industrial, or government), with at least five (5) years of supervisory experience.

Certifications/Licenses

Ability to acquire a Controlled Substances Registration (CDS) license.

Valid driver’s license required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Progressively advanced experience in AAALACi-accredited laboratory animal research programs (biomedical and agricultural).

Experience managing and mentoring staff; ability to lead diverse and geographically dispersed teams.

Strong communication, interpersonal, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills.

Ability to organize, prioritize, meet deadlines, and drive change.

Discretion with sensitive information and confidentiality.

Results-oriented with openness to feedback and continuous improvement.

Ability to participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.

Preferred Qualifications

USDA accreditation.

PhD or Master’s degree in biomedical research.
