Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Director Rutgers Animal Care for the Animal Care division of the Office for Research. The Office for Research (OFR) provides essential services university-wide that support faculty research and scholarship, including identifying sponsored award funding opportunities, submission of grant proposals, post-award financial management, negotiation of contracts, research regulatory affairs, intellectual property and commercialization activities, and core services. The Rutgers University Animal Care (RUAC) organization manages the care of a wide variety of vertebrate species used in biomedical and agricultural research and instruction on all campuses. Key duties include the following:
Responsibilities
Oversees and administers the laboratory animal care and use program in accordance with institutional policies, animal welfare laws, granting agency requirements, and standards for accreditation by AAALAC International.
Handles the veterinary care and husbandry activities at multiple sites across Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Camden campuses.
Oversees scientific animal endeavors and veterinary care of research animals.
Serves on the Rutgers Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) on each campus.
Provides oversight of the University's Veterinary Residency Program.
Partners with key stakeholders across the organization to align strategies and drive business outcomes.
Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and a license to practice in at least one state.
Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in laboratory animal medicine which includes institutional veterinary research (academic, industrial or government), including a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Ability to acquire a Controlled Substances Registration (CDS) license.
A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Progressively advanced experience in a diverse AAALACi accredited laboratory animal research program, including biomedical and agricultural research.
Demonstrated ability to manage people and act as a mentor to junior staff.
Demonstrated success working with and providing leadership for a diverse and geographically dispersed team.
Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to effectively interact with constituents and build trusted relationships.
Proven ability to organize and prioritize conflicting priorities, meet deadlines, and be a change agent to adopt new practices and procedures.
Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with discretion.
Results driven, accepts and acts on all forms of feedback to effect change.
Demonstrates patience, reliability, composure, and stability under pressure.
Ability to participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.
Preferred Qualifications
USDA accreditation.
PhD or Masters in the field of biomedical research.
