Khan Lab School (KLS) is an independent, nonprofit, co-educational school founded by Sal Khan in 2014 to reimagine education for the future. This role serves as a key strategic partner to the Executive Director, leadership team, and Board of Trustees in advancing the school’s mission and ensuring financial sustainability and operational excellence. The Senior Director of Finance & Administration is responsible for managing all aspects of the school’s financial health, including strategic stewardship of the school’s financial resources, day-to-day financial operations, long-term strategic planning, oversight of risk management and all fiduciary responsibilities. In addition, the Senior Director of Finance & Administration drives organizational growth and sustainability while overseeing a small, high performing team responsible for the school’s operations, including campus operations and safety, technology and data, business and development operations, and human resources. Specific Job Duties & Responsibilities
Finance & Accounting: Oversee day-to-day financial operations (accounts payable/receivable, tuition and financial aid, payroll and benefits administration, monthly close); partner with outsourced accounting support to ensure robust financial processes, internal controls, compliance with laws and regulations, and clean annual audits. Finance & Accounting: Lead long-term financial planning, scenario modeling, capital planning, annual budgeting process, ongoing budget management, and provide regular financial reporting to leadership and the Board of Trustees. Finance & Accounting: Manage financial risk, including insurance coverage, liquidity, and contingency planning. Finance & Accounting: Oversee treasury functions, investments and reserves; ensure alignment with Board-approved investment policy. Finance & Accounting: Collaborate with the Director of Business Operations & Development to oversee and track contributions, including restricted gifts. Finance & Accounting: Utilize data analytics and financial metrics to drive strategic decision-making across all school operations. Operations, Technology & Data: Provide oversight for campus operations, safety, technology infrastructure, and business functions via direct supervision of the Senior Director of School Operations & Technology and the Director of Business Operations & Development. Operations, Technology & Data: Support and guide new capital projects, including facilities renovation and future campus planning. Operations, Technology & Data: Supervise the KLS Assistant Director of Data and oversee core data systems (SIS, LMS, Tuition Management, and related infrastructure). Operations, Technology & Data: Oversee the collection and reporting of institutional metrics and surveys. Operations, Technology & Data: Lead organizational change management to support the school’s innovative model and operational scaling. Human Resources, Legal & Risk Management: With the Executive Director and outsourced HR support, oversee core people operations (talent acquisition, policies, reporting and compliance, compensation and benefits). Human Resources, Legal & Risk Management: Oversee annual employee agreement renewals process and conduct compensation benchmarking; collaborate with the Board on salary scales. Human Resources, Legal & Risk Management: Oversee annual faculty and staff performance evaluation process and facilitate in-person employee training. Human Resources, Legal & Risk Management: Support the Executive Director in managing investigations, claims, disputes, or litigation as needed. Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives: Refine annual planning to align with Three-Year Strategic Plan; support reaccreditation process; launch capital campaign; support Campus Master Planning; manage stakeholder relationships with donors, vendors, and community partners. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Experience
Strong alignment to the Khan Lab School vision and a passion for student-centered education models. Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field; advanced degree (MBA, CPA, or equivalent) preferred. 7–10+ years of senior-level finance and operations leadership experience, ideally within independent schools, higher education, or mission-driven nonprofits. Experience building and managing high performing teams in finance and operations. Deep knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management. Strong problem-solving, financial modeling, and budgeting skills. Strategic and creative thinker with operational savvy and a systems-oriented mindset. Experience managing HR, compliance, and risk management programs preferred. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills; ability to thrive in a collaborative, innovative environment with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency with financial systems, educational technology platforms, and data analytics tools. Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging. Physical Work Requirements
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally; occasional standing, walking, and movement around an office environment. Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time. Ability to operate a computer and related office equipment; maintain a safe and hazard-free workstation. Occasionally required to work weekends, nights, or be on-call for events, sometimes outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
