The Dental Director directs the activities of the Dental Department, including supervision of Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists. Responsible for dental services for all individuals living at the State Supported Living Center and certain individuals in community-based settings, including advanced dental care and treatment to elevate oral hygiene. Implement best practices in treatment and manage administrative functions such as budget planning, policy development, hiring/firing, and developing interdepartmental systems related to dental care and oral hygiene. Collaborate with Medical Services to elevate overall health for individuals residing at the facility and provide treatment to HHSC employees injured in course of employment. Plan, organize, manage and control department and interdepartmental functions to ensure high-quality dental services; stay current on best practices and develop or revise policies accordingly. Develop and authorize desensitization plans, assess medications for interactions with dental sedation methods, and ensure adherence by other dental personnel. Document services and generate reports on dental services both individually and organizationally. Communicate with individuals, families, and guardians to discuss needs, explain services, and address complex situations. Build relationships with community members and dental personnel to raise awareness, expand training opportunities, and public relations. Plan, assign, and supervise dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants; hire, train, motivate, and discipline staff as needed; manage contractual arrangements with oral surgeons, dental anesthetists, and other specialists. Manage the dental budget and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve services and facility operations. Provide expert consultation and assist with hiring and supervision at other SSLCs as needed. Provide treatment to HHSC employees injured on the job as required. Perform other duties including disaster response, Continuity of Operations (COOP) participation, and potential alternate shift patterns or locations. Qualifications

Knowledge of and experience performing dental services and using dental equipment; familiarity with best practices in oral hygiene and health care. Ability to diagnose dental problems, document examinations and courses of treatment. Knowledge of or ability to learn ICF-IID standards, HHSC policies, and related regulations. Ability to use basic computer software and electronic dental record systems; strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to manage a department and direct the work of others effectively. Maintain required continuing education hours. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Licensed as a dentist by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Current registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). National Provider Identifier (NPI) required. Initial Screening Criteria

Experience in general practice dentistry; a minimum of ten years of general practice experience is preferred. Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint background checks, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and LEIE. Selective Service registration is required for males aged 18-25. All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.
