The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Responsibilities (Lead Psychiatrist)

The Lead Psychiatrist performs highly advanced psychiatric work under direct supervision of the SSLC Medical Director. Responsibilities include directing, overseeing, and/or conducting examinations and diagnoses, administering psychiatric treatment and medications as needed, and directing staff to ensure high-quality treatment services. Lead duties include supervising others, participating in Peer Review Committees, serving on committees, and providing guidance to the treatment team. The role involves collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), reviewing patient records, and planning implementation of treatment plans, while following state and facility policies and regulatory requirements. Telework may be available at the center’s discretion with on-site requirements of at least 40 hours per month. Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attends work regularly and adheres to shift schedules; telework may be available as determined by leadership. May serve in an on-call capacity on a rotating basis. Conducts multidisciplinary psychiatric assessments, administers treatments and medications per SSLC policies in consultation with the IDT, attends 90-day medication reviews, and documents decisions in the electronic health record. Develops and implements individualized treatment plans, coordinates with other clinical staff, and participates in committees and quality improvement initiatives. May attend on-site specialty clinics and coordinates with visiting medical specialists. Maintains communication with Medical Director and facility leadership to ensure continuity of services. Leads and participates in quality improvement efforts, risk assessments, and policy development; participates in audits and reviews; travels to other SSLCs as needed to ensure compliance with regulations and standards. Provides staff guidance, conducts performance evaluations, and takes corrective action as needed. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements including Joint Commission standards, Texas Administrative Code, and the Department of Justice Settlement Agreement. Engages in ongoing professional development, staff training, and supports disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities as required. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including weekends and holidays. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of general medicine and psychiatry, development and implementation of individualized care, behavior treatment principles, and state formulary guidelines. Ability to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a large residential setting, use medical and psychiatric tools, and conduct research when necessary. Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office, plus the ability to assess, diagnose, and supervise treatment per policy and applicable laws. Ability to lead teams, coordinate with IDT, promote continuous quality improvement, manage polypharmacy, supervise staff, work independently, and communicate effectively in writing and oral form. Completion of required training (e.g., CPR, safe use of restraints) and adherence to HIPAA, ICF-IID regulations, and settlement agreements are expected. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Must be licensed (unrestricted) as a medical doctor in Texas and board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry in Texas. Must have current DEA registration and an NPI. Must enroll as a Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider. Qualifications and Screening

Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a psychiatrist. Experience with mental illness and intellectual disabilities preferred. Residency-trained. Applicants must pass fingerprint background checks, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and LEIE). Male applicants aged 18–25 must be registered with Selective Service. All state employees are subject to random drug testing. Flexibility in work hours, overtime, and weekend/holiday work may be required. Must be 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.
