This position requires a unique balance of technical, data and analytical expertise and a business strategist mindset. This role is responsible for overseeing multi-disciplinary teams in the building of data sources, data pipelines and the application of a broad array of analytics tools and predictive models to deliver data driven insights; and, then translating these insights into business value. This is a leadership position that requires strong partnerships across key business areas to advance the use of analytics. The role is expected to provide strategic analytical input using new data assets and tools to improve, and transform as needed, existing business processes, customer experience, and business results. It requires the ability to lead a data and analytics team in real business applications; the individual will be a critical bridge between data and analytics development and business partners to help optimize business performance. Job Specifications Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Information Technology, Mathematics, or Statistics preferred. A minimum of 8+ years hands-on experience acting as a Data Engineer, BI Analyst or Data Scientist. Depending on team goals one discipline may carry more weight. Proven ability to develop, coach and lead technical staff Deep experience with analytics programming languages (SQL/R/Python) Deep experience with modern BI toolsets (Tableau, Alteryx, PowerBI, or equivalent) In-depth understanding of data profiling, statistical analysis and data modeling concepts Adept in extracting, loading and leveraging data in data warehouse, transactional databases, object stores & API based environments Data Architecture and Infrastructure: good understanding of data architecture principles and related infrastructure requirements, covering on-prem and Cloud platforms Strong problem solving, programming and project management skills Excellent ability to interpret or correlate information and translate complex analytical/technical problems into simple business solutions for stakeholders Ability to think conceptually, handle ambiguity, solve complex problems and make thoughtful recommendations Excellent communications skills with all corporate levels including senior management and external contacts Principal Duties and Responsibilities Define the team's analytics strategy in partnership with Leadership across the organization. Define tools, methodologies and staff mix; set project priorities for the department. Define, develop and implement best practices to drive consistency and standardization of data usage and analytics practices Drive business stakeholder buy-in for data consumption, operationally and analytically Recruit, train, performance manage, coach, develop and retain staff at a high level; build bench strength and motivate high performers Oversee the construction of predictive models, data pipelines and analytics workflows in support of operational and analytics objectives, and contribute to development of these assets as needed Work with partners to translate business needs into a technical plan, identify available data, communicate findings and results, and develop implementation strategies Provide consulting support to business areas around conformance to corporate policies/procedures and controls, as needed Understand theory and application of current and emerging analysis methods and data tooling to drive continuous improvement opportunities Identify internal and external data sources, construct analytical databases and develop data pipelines that enhance business performance Discuss data transformation, integration, and reporting requirements with both technical and non-technical audiences Oversee mentoring and training of team members on statistical methods, tools and development of data assets Perform other related duties as assigned The following tags are included for recruitment referencing: #LI-TO1, ~IN1, #LI-MULTI Unum and Colonial Life are part of Unum Group, a Fortune 500 company and leading provider of employee benefits to companies worldwide.
