Overview
Join a diverse, dynamic, and enthusiastic team of environmental engineering professionals who play a leading role in air quality permitting and compliance at Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a member of the Air Quality Team, you will develop and implement environmental programs to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and standards in the Americas while enabling AWS’s growth around the world. As an Air Quality Engineer with a strong focus on air dispersion modeling, you will support air permitting and air quality compliance for new and existing AWS facilities in the Americas (AMER) region. You will be the environmental representative on behalf of the AWS Environmental Team in AMER responsible for delivering air permitting projects. You will partner with stakeholders across AWS to develop standards and mechanisms that incorporate air dispersion modeling into planning, building, and operating data centers. You will manage strategic air dispersion modeling and air permitting projects and provide regulatory compliance guidance for both design and operations teams. The role will involve working with internal and external partners, including government entities, AWS regional environmental engineers, consultants, design, construction, operations, and other key stakeholders. You will regularly engage with stakeholders, report to AWS Environmental leaders, and ensure risks to air permitting and compliance pathways are identified, communicated, and managed. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of air dispersion modeling in support of air permitting in North America, the ability to deliver multiple high-priority projects simultaneously, the ability to drive alignment across teams with competing priorities, and be a strong advocate for air quality compliance and sustainability. Key job responsibilities
Function as a leader for air dispersion modeling work in AMER by completing air dispersion modeling analyses in support of air permitting and strategic data center planning and design Develop air dispersion modeling tools and mechanisms which provide efficient technical oversight to environmental and partner teams Collaborate with relevant business units such as environmental infrastructure development, design engineering, due diligence, real estate, construction, and operations beginning early in the capacity planning and site selection process and throughout the design phase of facilities to ensure future compliance with environmental regulations and air dispersion modeling thresholds Manage contracts, budgets, and relationships with environmental consultants and vendors to complete air permit applications, air dispersion modeling analyses and perform air emissions testing Prepare air permit applications in AMER by managing the preparation of air permit applications for new construction, modifications, amendments, and renewals Function as a leader regarding regulatory agency interactions for permit evaluation and processing, new process and technology introduction, and technical application of air dispersion modeling protocols Build effective relationships with regulatory bodies, laboratories, and service providers for air permitting program Consult on strategies to reduce environmental impact of air emissions Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently Represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies and throughout the company A day in the life
This role's primary focus is to function as an environmental air quality engineering leader and provide critical air dispersion modeling analyses and strategies that support AWS growth and compliance in the Americas. You will work directly with partner teams throughout the data center development lifecycle to encourage sustainable air quality development and design and to ensure compliance with local, state and federal air regulations. You may be required to monitor and review evolving and emerging air quality permitting/modeling regulations and assess impacts of regulatory changes to AWS and propose a course of action. 2-5 years with air dispersion modeling analyses (AERMOD) in support of air permit applications and NAAQS evaluations 2-5 years with air quality regulatory assessments and air emissions evaluations, serving as an environmental technical resource, program specialist, or program manager Experience with air permitting at local, state (e.g., minor source/synthetic minor source), and federal (e.g., Title V, NSR, PSD) levels Experience with engine-specific regulations including 40 CFR 63 Subpart ZZZZ and 40 CFR 60 Subpart IIII Experience conducting iterative, just-in-time air dispersion modeling analyses via AERMOD with and without a graphical user interface software Strong interpersonal skills: excellent communication, relationship-building, influencing and negotiation abilities, and the ability to coach at multiple levels Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
