Main duties of the job

Provide high quality nursing care to patients with physical healthcare needs in a prison setting.

Accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient’s care.

Provide basic leadership to junior staff by maintaining professional standards and adherence to relevant policies and procedures to ensure high‑quality care.

Provide support and supervision for junior staff and learners.

This post includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours (night, weekends and bank holidays).

Job responsibilities The Offender Health Care Group provides physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire. The Care Group serves 7 prisons and a short-term holding facility, with a peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals offering supervision and development opportunities. We also provide services within the Personality Disorder Pathway, including Therapeutic Communities, and specialist Veteran Services.

We are committed to working in partnership with prison services, the National Probation Service and other healthcare providers to improve health, support justice and reduce re-offending. The Offender Health Team aims to deliver consistent, high‑quality care in primary, mental health and substance misuse services equivalent to services outside of prison.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The DBS application costs are £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced) and will be deducted over the first 2 months of employment. You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service; an annual fee of £16 per year applies.

Person Specification Qualifications

First level registered nurse / RN

Significant/demonstrable experience within the substance misuse field with evidence of continued learning

Certificate/Diploma in Counselling

Experience

Experience of assessing patient conditions, triaging services and providing clinical interventions

Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Experience of working in a criminal justice setting

Experience of working with a range of statutory agencies and external organisations

Experience of supervising and mentoring junior staff

Knowledge

Understanding of healthcare issues relevant to criminal justice and substance misuse

Local and National Offender Health Strategy

Assessment and triage skills
