Director of the Center for Autism Research at Rutgers Brain Health Institute
Overview The Rutgers Brain Health Institute (BHI) is recruiting an outstanding tenure-eligible investigator to serve as the Director of Rutgers Center for Autism Research, Education and Services (RUCARES). RUCARES focuses on diagnosing, treating, and supporting children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The center was established in 2020 to foster the growth of autism research, education and services at Rutgers. The initiative has expanded under RUCARES leadership with substantial NIH funding growth and partnerships with Children’s Specialized Hospital (CSH). RUCARES and its clinical arm CSH-RUCARES are leaders in autism research and clinical service in New Jersey. Interested candidates should note that career opportunities include strong startup packages to establish the Director’s own research program and to grow the center.
The ideal candidate will be a research leader in autism spectrum disorders with a strong, externally funded research program who utilizes basic or clinical approaches to address key questions regarding autism and related disorders. A primary role of the Director will be to coordinate and nurture existing research and clinical activities while growing Rutgers into a world leader in basic and clinical autism research. Applicants must have a PhD, MD or equivalent degree, with an independent research program focused on autism spectrum disorders and demonstrate strong leadership skills. Investigators in basic science or clinical research are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities and Expectations The Director will coordinate and nurture existing research and clinical activities, and advocate for growth of Rutgers into a world leader in autism research. The position includes leadership responsibilities in directing RUCARES and contributing to strategic development, research planning, and collaboration across Rutgers and partner institutions. Salary is highly competitive and startup packages are provided to establish the Director’s research program and grow the center.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: PhD, MD or equivalent degree with an independent research program focused on autism spectrum disorders.
Certifications/Licenses: If a practicing clinician, eligible for professional licensure in New Jersey.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated leadership capabilities and an externally funded research program in autism (basic science or clinical research encouraged).
Preferred Qualifications: Experience leading a research group and a track record of NIH or equivalent funding.

Salary and Compensation Salary details: $150,000 to $350,000 commensurate with experience. The final salary offer may be determined by qualifications, experience, expertise, and availability of department or grant funds. We consider market benchmarks and internal equity to ensure fair compensation within the university’s structure. We offer competitive and flexible compensation packages to attract and retain top talent.
