Postdoctoral Fellow - Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences, Wayne State University, Detroit campus. Responsibilities
Based on the year of the scholar/fellow, conduct research directly early in the program and focus on papers, grants, and related activities later, in collaboration with the mentor and the Individual Development Plan.
Perform scientific techniques or research protocols and assist the Principal Investigator in designing and performing protocols.
Design and perform experiments; collect and log research data; ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines; assist other lab members with experiments as required; may mentor research assistants and students.
Identify and pursue research grants with the goal of obtaining additional funding; coordinate correspondence with applicants and grantees and maintain a system to track proposals.
Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of data; prepare presentations of results for professional conferences; organize data for submission to peer‑reviewed journals; write scientific manuscripts and other publication documents; proofread and edit research documents.
Maintain laboratory work areas and equipment; order and organize required supplies; maintain cleanliness and organization of the work station.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Unique duties
The successful applicant will independently conduct experiments involving cellular and molecular aspects of immunity and immunopathogenesis to herpes simplex virus infection.
Participate in local, national, and international research meetings and present research as posters or oral presentations.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Doctorate degree; advanced knowledge in a scientific field, acquired through prolonged specialized instruction.
Experience: Intermediate (3 to 4 years job-related experience); includes doctorate training; experience performing basic research techniques; demonstrated distinction in research; prior funding for research is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently; ability to secure grants and funding; ability to analyze, summarize and interpret findings; knowledge of scientific integrity principles; excellent time management and organization; strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; Microsoft Office skills.
Preferred qualifications: Previous mouse handling experience; technical expertise in electron microscopy, imaging, real-time PCR, and Western blotting; publications in peer‑reviewed journals; presentation of research at national/international meetings; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work both in a team and independently; freshly graduated candidates are welcome.
