What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a motivated engineer for research and development of electric motors. This position is critical to the development of high-performance, high-efficiency, and low-cost electric powertrains for Tesla's current and future electric vehicles. This person will be working with the motor research team to improve modeling accuracy of electric motor losses and flux, design and optimize electric powertrains, develop test plans and perform measurements in the dyno lab. What You'll Do
Develop in-house electric motor design tools, continue evolving finite element tools to improve high frequency loss modeling in the core and conductors Develop analytical models to improve the flux linkage and loss calculation for various types of motors Optimize the motor design methodology from lamination level to powertrain system, optimizing the computational resource needed to allow exploring larger design space Detailed motor design and optimization to optimize system cost, efficiency and NVH Motor dyno loss characterization and fault characterization Explore and design innovative motor topology Develop motor control simulation model and support motor control firmware Create simulation model for thermal model development and system engineering What You'll Bring
Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience Strong mathematical and physical understanding of speed/frequency dependent loss mechanisms Excellent knowledge of finite element method Strong Matlab or Python programming skills Knowledge of motor thermal modeling Experience on electric motor loss characterization Knowledge of electric vehicle powertrain system Knowledge of motor control theory Expertise including NVH analysis in electric motors and drive units, rotor structural analysis, magnetic materials, and finite element model development Compensation and Benefits

$100,160 - $225,840 annual salary plus cash and stock awards plus benefits. Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
