Communications Dispatchers answer all calls for emergency services and maintain radio and mobile data computer contact with police officers and firefighters in the field, acting as a lifeline by providing information and support and monitoring their safety. This position is represented by the City\'s Safety Support (SS) Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association\'s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The City provides a generous compensation and benefits package, including CalPERS 2.5% @ 55 for classic members; $2,150/month towards health insurance (with option of up to $475/month as taxable cash); a monthly contribution of $250 to an RHS account for retiree medical savings; generous vacation accruals with the option for annual cash-outs. Candidates who have received a minimum passing t-score of 48 or better on the POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery examination within the last 12 months may provide a copy of their results to qualify past this step of the recruitment process.

Maintain radio and mobile data computer contact with City personnel (e.g., police officers, firefighters, community services officers, and traffic control officers) in the field, acting as a lifeline to provide information and support and monitoring their safety. Answer all calls to the City 911 number; coordinate emergency services; determine priorities; dispatch appropriate services in each situation; answer emergency and business lines; screen and route calls; determine needs and dispatch personnel. Receive and input information into City, State, and Federal computers pertaining to theft, missing and wanted persons, license plate information, etc., and relay information to police. Log all calls in appropriate logbooks, incident cards, or records messages; monitor all emergency bands 24 hours a day for any unusual occurrences and contact appropriate services when needed. Maintain and change all audio and visual logging equipment; report malfunctioning and out of service equipment. Train new employees; perform clerical duties (e.g., record keeping, filing, compiling reports and indexing). Receive, identify, and accurately evaluate emergency and routine calls for police, fire, and paramedic services; provide pre-arrival Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions and lifesaving directions over the telephone. Use established policies and procedures, independent judgement, and sound reasoning to make rapid and accurate decisions to achieve an effective initial course of action. Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices, protocols, methods, and procedures. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
