Gastroenterology Hospitalist
UW Health Northern Illinois seeks a BE/BC Gastroenterologist to join our community practice in Rockford, Ill. Help build a leading digestive health program to support a growing community with a primary market of a population of 350,000 and a secondary market of more than 750,000.
Responsibilities
Quaternary support in patient care from UW Health’s University Hospital in Madison, Wis., with the ability to participate in weekly tumor boards and clinical trials.
Work within UW Health Northern Illinois, which employs more than 310 providers. Within our medical group, there are over 100 primary care providers who provide care to more than 132,000 unique patient lives.
Collaborate with the comprehensive interdisciplinary cancer team at the UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center Rockford, which has more than 70% of the market share.
Local teaching opportunities of rotating GI residents and fellows, as well as medical students.
Qualifications
MD or DO; BC or BE in Gastroenterology.
Active Illinois medical license and DEA license, or ability to secure these prior to hire.

Job Duties Inpatient GI Consults
Evaluate and manage hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic diseases.
Provide timely consultation services to hospitalists, surgeons, and other specialists.
Endoscopic Procedures
Perform inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, such as:
Upper endoscopy (EGD)
Colonoscopy
ERCP (if trained)
Sigmoidoscopy
Paracentesis
PEG tube placement
Acute GI Case Management
Manage urgent GI conditions such as GI bleeding, acute pancreatitis, severe inflammatory bowel disease flares, biliary obstruction, and hepatic encephalopathy.
Coordination of Care
Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., hospitalists, intensivists, surgeons, nutritionists).
Coordinate post-discharge GI care and ensure smooth transition to outpatient follow-up.
Documentation and Compliance
Accurately document consults, procedures, and patient progress in the electronic medical record.
Ensure adherence to hospital policies, infection control standards, and procedural protocols.
Weekend and On-Call Coverage
Provide GI coverage during nights, weekends, or holidays as part of a call rotation.
