San Benito County Jail Responsibilities

Comprehensive Psychiatric Care: Provide high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to inmates, including the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders. Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates. Ensure treatment plans follow best practices and are updated based on ongoing follow-ups. Medication Management: Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications for inmates as part of their treatment plans. Conduct regular medication reviews to assess efficacy, side effects, and patient compliance. Psychiatric Evaluations: Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, including mental status exams and risk assessments, to diagnose mental health conditions and plan the appropriate treatment. Crisis Intervention: Provide psychiatric crisis intervention for inmates experiencing acute mental or emotional distress. Ensure timely and effective treatment to manage self-harm risks, suicidal ideation, and aggressive behaviors. Therapeutic Interventions: Offer individual and group psychotherapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, or other psychotherapeutic techniques to address a range of psychological concerns. Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with other healthcare professionals and correctional staff to ensure coordinated care for patients with complex mental health and medical needs. Behavioral Health Support: Provide mental health education to inmates, correctional staff, and other medical personnel, helping to reduce stigma and improve understanding of psychiatric disorders and their treatment. Documentation and Record Keeping: Document promptly and properly. Risk Assessment and Management: Conduct regular risk assessments for suicidal ideation, violent behavior, and other potential threats to inmate or staff safety. Make recommendations for safety protocols and initiate involuntary treatment as necessary. Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest standards of psychiatric practice, including ensuring informed consent for treatment, respecting patient confidentiality, and adhering to ethical guidelines set forth by psychiatric governing bodies. Psychiatric Consultation: Provide expert psychiatric consultation to other healthcare providers and correctional staff regarding mental health management and behavioral issues within the facility. Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts, including audits, reviews, and feedback to improve patient care and ensure compliance with mental health laws, regulations, and facility standards. Supervision and Mentorship: Provide supervision and guidance to psychiatric/mental health staff to ensure high-quality care and promote professional development. Training and Education: Participate in training and educational initiatives for correctional staff, helping them recognize signs of mental illness and understand how to appropriately interact with inmates with mental health issues. On-Call and After-Hours Care: Provide call-by-phone services as needed, including after-hours psychiatric care for inmates experiencing psychiatric crises or severe distress. Qualifications

Active, unencumbered license to practice medicine in the State of California Must have (or be eligible for) current and unrestricted DEA Registration One (1) year of clinical experience required (Psychiatry Residency or Fellowship meets this requirement) Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Psychiatry, at minimum Active CPR/BLS certificate required prior to start date (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved) Please visit our website to learn more about opportunities with us!
