The

Psychiatrist

will provide comprehensive mental health care to patients in a correctional setting, including psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication management for individuals with mental health disorders. This role will collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure integrated, evidence-based care. The

Psychiatrist

will also maintain accurate medical records, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and support the overall mental health program within the facility.

Responsibilities

Comprehensive Psychiatric Care: Provide high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to inmates, including the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders.

Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for inmates, considering their unique psychological, social, and physical needs. Ensure treatment plans are in line with best practices and updated based on ongoing evaluations.

Medication Management: Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications for inmates as part of their treatment plan. Conduct regular medication reviews to assess efficacy, side effects, and patient compliance.

Psychiatric Evaluations: Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, including mental status exams and risk assessments, to diagnose mental health conditions and determine the appropriate course of treatment. Perform psychiatric evaluations for intake screenings as required.

Crisis Intervention: Provide psychiatric crisis intervention for inmates experiencing acute mental health episodes or emotional distress. Ensure timely and effective treatment to manage self-harm risks, suicidal ideation, and aggressive behaviors.

Therapeutic Interventions: Offer individual and group psychotherapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, or other psychotherapeutic techniques.

Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care for patients with complex mental health and medical needs.

Behavioral Health Support: Provide mental health education to inmates, correctional staff, and other medical personnel, helping to reduce stigma and improve understanding of psychiatric disorders and their treatment.

Documentation and Record Keeping: Accurately document assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, medication management, and changes in patient conditions; maintain timely and accurate medical records in compliance with facility protocols, HIPAA, and legal requirements.

Mental Health Support for Special Populations: Provide specialized care for inmates with mental health conditions, including co-occurring substance use disorders, traumatic brain injuries, or histories of abuse; address needs of high-risk or vulnerable populations.

Risk Assessment and Management: Conduct regular risk assessments for suicidal ideation, violent behavior, and other potential threats to safety; make recommendations for safety protocols and initiate involuntary treatment as necessary.

Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Uphold high standards of practice, including informed consent, patient confidentiality, and ethical guidelines.

Psychiatric Consultation: Provide expert psychiatric consultation to other healthcare providers and correctional staff regarding mental health management.

Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in CQI efforts, including audits and reviews to improve patient care and ensure compliance with laws and facility standards.

Supervision and Mentorship: Provide supervision and guidance to other behavioral health staff to ensure high-quality care and professional development.

Training and Education: Participate in training initiatives for correctional staff on recognizing signs of mental illness and appropriate interaction with inmates.

On-Call and After-Hours Care: Provide on-call services as needed, including after-hours psychiatric care for crises or severe distress.

Staff and Inmate Safety: Collaborate with officers and leadership to ensure services are provided in a safe environment and compliant with facility protocols.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

What we Ask of YOU

A current, valid, and unrestricted state license, certification, and/or credential authorizing practice in the applicable clinical role (e.g., MD, DO, NP, PA, RN, etc.) is required. A High School diploma or GED is required.

An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare, or a related field is preferred for applicable roles.

For advanced clinical roles, completion of an accredited graduate or professional program is required.

A current, valid DEA registration, if applicable.

Board certification in a relevant specialty is preferred, if applicable.

Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical practice, with at least 1-2 years in a correctional or underserved setting preferred.

Experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, and providing healthcare services in a managed care or correctional facility setting is highly preferred.

Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guidelines).
