Overview
Amica Center for Immigrant Rights (formerly CAIR Coalition) is the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition. We are the only non-profit in the Washington, DC area focused exclusively on providing legal assistance to adult and child immigrants detained by the government in the Capital Region and beyond. Amica Center has renamed from CAIR Coalition to Amica Center for Immigrant Rights to reflect our expanded services and geographic reach. "Amica" is the Latin word for "friend," echoing how we support our clients to achieve safety, stability, and opportunity. Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Attorney to help lead the Immigration Impact Lab’s efforts to expand its impact litigation and referral systems in new circuits (particularly the Third, Sixth, and Eleventh Circuits). The Senior Attorney collaborates with the appellate and federal litigation team to meet Lab goals, including: Conduct broad-based legal research, case development, and written pleadings on novel immigration claims. Provide direct legal services to immigrants through appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and federal circuit courts and litigation in district court. Collaborate with pro bono attorneys through co-counseling, mentoring, and trainings. Supervise staff attorneys, legal assistants, interns, and, when applicable, other support staff. Manage program projects and contribute to program development, including fundraising and thought leadership opportunities (media, panels, webinars). Responsibilities
Representation
Supervise staff attorneys, interns, and potentially legal assistants on Lab goals and cases. Work on federal impact litigation, including habeas petitions and appeals; identify and develop potential affirmative impact litigation efforts. Conduct legal research and draft pleadings for federal courts and immigration agencies. Represent clients at the BIA, federal circuit courts of appeals, and federal district courts; draft amicus briefs as needed. Investigate and collect information to support federal court litigation. Lead at least one large-scale litigation effort per year (e.g., class action or circuit court case of national importance), internally and with co-counsel and other stakeholders. Manage program projects supporting impact litigation and assist management and staff of other programs with innovative legal strategies and issues for appeal. Maintain a caseload of in-house cases and pro bono matters to ensure timely and high-quality filings. Provide technical legal assistance on issues affecting immigrants at risk of detention and deportation, including intersections of criminal and immigration law. Mentor and co-counsel with pro bono attorneys and educate advocates through trainings, practice advisories, and outreach. Organizational Services
Assist program management with long-term plans and strategy; ensure data accuracy in shared databases. Participate in stakeholder relationships with community groups and legal service providers; conduct trainings and stakeholder meetings. Engage with internal Amica Center committees and working groups to influence growth and strategy. Perform administrative functions related to casework; note that Amica Center does not provide dedicated paralegals for case work and non-attorney staff time is focused on client-facing tasks. $67,800-$85,600; commensurate with relevant experience per Amica Center salary scale. Benefits
