Overview

The San Francisco Police Department is seeking Peace Officers with valid POST certification to join a highly respected police department and serve the citizens of one of the most beautiful cities in the country. San Francisco Police Officers perform a wide variety of duties to promote public safety and security, prevent crime and enforce the law. Police officers perform a number of essential functions, including patrolling districts, responding to calls, conducting investigations, interacting with the community, pursuing and arresting suspects, enforcing laws, writing reports, and fulfilling other administrative duties as required.

Responsibilities

Patrol districts to prevent and detect crime; respond to calls for assistance; conduct criminal investigations.

Interact with the community to build cooperation and support; pursue and arrest suspects; enforce traffic and parking laws.

Write reports, maintain records, and work with superiors, peers, and others as a team.

Prepare for and participate in planned events; prepare for court and give testimony; fulfill other administrative duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Certification: Hold a valid California POST (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced) Certificate or Basic Course Waiver (BCW).

Education: U.S. High School Graduate or equivalent (GED, CHSPE) or an AA or higher degree from an accredited college or university in the United States.

Age: At least 21 years of age by the time of appointment.

Driver’s License: Valid driver license to operate an automobile at the time of application and throughout the selection process; California Driver License required prior to hire.

Judicial Record: Must not have felony convictions; not convicted of offenses involving domestic violence; not convicted of certain misdemeanors; not restricted from employment with the City and County of San Francisco.

POST Certificates or Basic Course Waiver must be submitted with the application. Copies of certificates can be uploaded to the application. Applicants may be required to verify education and experience during the recruitment process. Falsifying information may result in disqualification. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a City and County of San Francisco application.

Selection Procedures

Oral Interview (100%): Assesses community involvement, motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, and oral communication. The score places candidates on the eligible list.

Notification of pass/fail status via email. Re-take opportunities may be allowed after one month from previous attempt.

Eligible List / Certification Rule: Names remain on the eligible list for up to 24 months. The department may hire from the list; being on the list does not guarantee employment. Further processes determine final eligibility for appointment.
