Associate Principal Scientist – Fermentation, Novel Expression Systems
MSD, Rahway, New Jersey, us, 07065
Overview
Associate Principal Scientist – Fermentation, Novel Expression Systems The Novel Expression Systems (NES) team seeks an Associate Principal Scientist with experience in fermentation engineering and process development. The NES team is part of the Continuous & Expression Technologies group within the Process Research & Development Enabling Technologies organization. We advance expression systems across multiple organisms for discovery and development of novel biologics, vaccines, and engineered enzymes, working closely with scientists across the company to improve human health. This role will be a subject matter expert in microbial fermentation process development, expected to lead and drive innovation to enhance capabilities within the organization. The candidate will help execute the group’s strategy, lead or co-lead cross-functional technology development initiatives, identify high-impact projects, set priorities, and execute plans experimentally to enhance the company pipeline. Responsibilities include developing and optimizing fermentation processes for different microbial hosts across scales, coordinating with partner groups, and managing CROs/CMOs to meet timelines. The candidate will identify, develop, and implement novel technologies to broaden fermentation capabilities and engage externally through presentations, publications, and participation in external consortia. As a leader, the candidate will mentor, coach, and train scientists at the bench. Requirements: Extensive experience and knowledge in fermentation process development and optimization, scale-up and scale-down, preferably in microbes such as Bacillus subtilis. In-depth knowledge and experience with microbial fermentations at bench and pilot scales. Knowledge and experience with downstream process development (e.g., flocculation, microfiltration, ultrafiltration) strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience working with and managing CROs/CMOs is highly preferred. Familiarity with biocatalysis, protein engineering, biotherapeutics, and/or vaccines is a plus. Ability to lead collaborative multi-disciplinary teams for successful outcomes. Ability to coach and mentor other researchers. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations. Education Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Candidates with B.S. and/or M.S. degree plus 7+ years relevant industry experience will also be considered. EEO and Employment Information:
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and provide equal opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment. We comply with applicable laws and require accommodations on request during the application or hiring process where needed. Additional Information:
This posting includes details on hybrid work arrangements where applicable, salary range, and benefits information as described in the original posting. For full details and to apply, visit the official careers site. The posting end date is included for awareness and may be updated as needed.
