Associate Principal Scientist – Fermentation, Novel Expression Systems
Merck, Rahway, New Jersey, us, 07065
Overview
Associate Principal Scientist – Fermentation, Novel Expression Systems. The NES team focuses on fermentation engineering and process development to enable expression systems across diverse organisms for discovery and development of biologics, vaccines, and engineered enzymes. The role involves leading microbial fermentation process development, cross-functional collaboration, and driving innovations to advance capabilities within the organization. Responsibilities
Lead and drive innovation in microbial fermentation process development and scale-up/scale-down across different hosts and project needs. Develop, optimize, and transfer fermentation processes; work with downstream processing to support integrated workflows. Collaborate with partner groups and external thought leaders; identify high-impact cross-functional projects; set priorities and goals; execute plans across functional boundaries. Design and implement novel technologies to broaden fermentation capabilities; engage externally through presentations, publications, and consortia. Mentor, coach, and train scientists; foster scientific rigor and collaborative problem solving. Manage CROs/CMOs for project-related tasks to meet timelines. Support and contribute to the group’s strategy and pipeline development. Qualifications
Extensive experience in fermentation process development and optimization; knowledge of scale-up/scale-down; experience with microbes (e.g., Bacillus subtilis) preferred. In-depth experience with microbial fermentations at bench and pilot scales. Knowledge of downstream processing (flocculation, microfiltration, ultrafiltration) is strongly preferred. Experience managing CROs/CMOs is highly preferred. Familiarity with biocatalysis, protein engineering, biotherapeutics, or vaccines is a plus. Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and to coach/mentor researchers. Excellent communication and organizational skills; strong publication and presentation track record. Education Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology, or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Candidates with B.S. and/or M.S. plus 7+ years relevant experience will also be considered. Additional Information
US and Puerto Rico residents: accommodations available during hiring process; EEO information provided as required. Salary range: $139,600.00 - $219,700.00; eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentives where applicable.
