Will Consider Junior Engineering Technician. Under the general supervision of a Transportation Surveyor-Party Chief or Senior Transportation Surveyor incumbent performs complex nonprofessional surveying field/office work. Incumbent works as a field technician performing various surveying duties including digging, clearing of brush, setting of durable monuments, pipe driving, removal of asphalt and operating and maintaining various precise surveying instruments. In an office setting, uses various complex computer applications, computer aided drafting and engineering and research products. The incumbent will be assigned work based on Departmental needs and could be assigned to either a Field Survey Crew working near traffic or heavy equipment, or in an office setting within District 4. Working Conditions

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors. While at their base of operation, incumbent may work in a climate controlled office under artificial lighting. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Offices may be fixed buildings or trailers. Work generally consists of five eight‑hour days and may require travel, overtime, weekend and night work. Vacations/Leave usage may be restricted during peak times. Night work requires ability to work under and with artificial lighting. The incumbent will be assigned work based on Divisional and/or Departmental needs and could be assigned to any office within District 4, which includes all nine Bay Area Counties. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquarters location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. A Transportation Engineering Technician must have the ability to review and understand various types of basic Surveying data in the Micro station/CAD or computer environment. Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance, as well as read, review and understand construction plans, right of way maps, and monumentation maps. Incumbents must have background in mathematics including fundamental geometry and trigonometry concepts used in survey calculations. The following are knowledge abilities and analytical requirements necessary for this position: Understand and practice current safety procedures as described in the Code of Safe Surveying Practices and the Caltrans Illness and Injury Prevention Program. Assist with the research, verifying and adjusting of survey data, if directed. May include making and interpreting less difficult survey calculations. Apply and utilize basic principles of trigonometry as used in simple plane and geodetic surveying and within the California Coordinate System.
