Overview
The Cowichan Valley Department of Psychiatry of Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) is seeking a General Psychiatrist interested in joining the Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) programs. The Cowichan Valley supports a continuum of services including Cowichan District Hospital’s 15-bed Psychiatry In-Patient Unit, which works collaboratively with primary care providers. Through Duncan’s Mental Health Substance Use programs the successful candidate will consult to short term services, case management, and substance use programs, with opportunities for involvement in research and education. Responsibilities
Consult to Short Term Services (community Crisis Response and Brief interventions) through which the Psychiatry team provides part of the programs’ response to GP referrals. Provide Case Management Services for moderate community support and participate in a more intense ACT team (Assertive Community Treatment); plus an Early Psychosis Intervention program. Engage in Substance Use programs which provide counselling and access to residential treatment; contribute to integration with community responses to the opioid crisis. Participate in a graduated housing program that supports people in the community who could not otherwise live independently. Collaborate with separate psychiatric services for seniors; Island Health psychiatrists may participate in these services. Support two tertiary psychiatry facilities in the Cowichan Valley: Seniors tertiary care (25 beds) and Adult tertiary care (27 beds). Contribute to a modified psychiatrist on-call response with a crisis response team for the Cowichan District Hospital Emergency Department and hospital-wide consultation-liaison activities, potentially supported by BC’s Medical On Call Availability Program (MOCAP) depending on service level. Opportunities for training medical students and residents through Island Health as part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Island Medical Program. Participate in research as supported by Island Health. Attend clinical team meetings and provide reports to the Department of Psychiatry meetings as part of administrative duties. Start Date

Compensation Type: Fee-for-Service. Estimated remuneration: Mixed Fee-for-Service and Sessional Billing. Benefits may include eligibility for Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) incentives, relocation funding up to $15,000, Recruitment Incentive of $10,000, and Rural CME opportunities starting at $3,000 per year in years 3-4 and up to $6,000 per year after year 4 (subject to eligibility). Other benefits include potential office space and administrative support where available.
