Overview
Superblock Engineering Capabilities Architect – Active Clearance Required. This is a career opportunity at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED). The role involves leading a large technical team, delivering a diverse portfolio of projects within the Superblock facility, a DOE Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility. Hybrid schedule may be available depending on assignment.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and direction to all Superblock design portfolio managers, overseeing a portfolio (~$70M, ~70 FTE) across all project phases (initiation, design, installation, readiness assessments, turnover to operations, decommissioning). Monitor performance to meet milestones, lead corrective actions, and ensure safety and efficiency.
Strategically plan with engineering, project management, and scientific teams to develop short and long-range strategies that meet facility needs, ensure programmatic excellence, compliance, and risk management, while fostering innovation and accountability.
Oversee financial planning and resource allocation, developing and managing budgets to meet performance, cost, and schedule targets.
Serve as subject matter expert and technical leader on projects, delivering strategic technical advice, resolving conflicts, and evaluating innovative methods and technologies.
Determine staffing needs and invest in personnel development to maintain a high-quality, agile workforce.
Coordinate with functional leads (engineering, operations, maintenance, procurement) to ensure adequate resources and balanced support for multi-million-dollar projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance at time of hire.
Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field (Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, Civil, or related) or equivalent experience.
Expert-level experience building, motivating, and leading large, multi-disciplinary teams on nuclear weapon engineering projects or within nuclear facility engineering programs.
Experience managing a significant multi-million-dollar technical portfolio with successful delivery of results.
Expert-level skills in project management and systems engineering for workforce planning, scheduling, cost estimating, budgeting, risk mitigation, and reporting.
Strong communication, facilitation, collaboration, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills for directing an organization and advising senior management.
Desirable Qualifications
Advanced degree in engineering or related technical field.
Understanding of nuclear facilities and operations in a high-hazard environment and related regulatory requirements.
Experience collaborating with DOE, DoD, external advisors, and reviewers across the DOE/DoD enterprise.
