Overview
Brighter Bites is a nonprofit that creates communities of health through fresh food with the goal of changing behavior among children and their families to prevent obesity and achieve long-term health. Brighter Bites is an evidence-based, multi-component elementary school, preschool, and summer camp program that utilizes reliable access to fruits and vegetables, nutrition education, and consistent exposure to recipes and messages that feature fresh food. Role The Program Coordinator will assist with the management and organization of activities of the Brighter Bites program in areas including, but not limited to: community relations, program implementation and evaluation, site operations, nutrition education implementation, and volunteer recruitment and engagement. Additionally, the Program Coordinator will work in tandem with existing program staff to support a smooth and successful transition to the Brighter Bites 2.0 pilot program at select partner schools in Prince George’s County, MD, and the District of Columbia.
Position Description
Assists with all aspects of Brighter Bites program implementation:
Manages multiple sites for Brighter Bites program, including program schedules, location and distribution schedules, and budgetary implications.
Works effectively with key contacts at sites as well as site volunteers regarding all program components and policies including produce bagging (if applicable), produce distribution, preparation of weekly snack samples, and delivery of nutrition education.
Directly delivers nutrition education lessons to elementary school children as well as workshops for children, families and teachers and/or supports implementation of CATCH classroom lessons by teachers at select schools.
Oversees work of external interns, volunteers, and Brighter Bites Associates at sites to ensure proper program implementation.
Coordinates and collaborates across departments, sites, and organizations regarding Brighter Bites activities and strategies:
Informs management of key activities and makes periodic program evaluation and progress reports.
Tracks Brighter Bites program components by maintaining accurate data and reports for each site.
Collaborates with the Brighter Bites team on development, implementation, and management of program policies and procedures.
Assists with fundraising/marketing events, as needed (may include some weekends).
Communicates with the larger community to share objectives and outcomes:
Interacts with Brighter Bites funders, partner organizations, public and/or external organizations to facilitate program dissemination.
Prepares and delivers oral presentations at professional meetings as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Bilingual (Spanish/English) is required.
Passion for sharing the power of fresh food with others, especially children and families.
Bachelor's degree in nutrition, public health, education or a related field.
Previous experience working in a school as a teacher, social worker, administrator, etc., a plus.
Basic culinary skills and strong interest in cooking.
Basic knowledge of nutrition education and agriculture.
Previous experience working with children and parents, preferably in an educational setting.
Excellent written and verbal skills and competent mathematical skills.
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel.
Previous experience volunteering/interning with Brighter Bites, a plus.
Operational and Physical Requirements The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Must be able to travel independently to school sites around Prince George’s County, MD and the Washington, DC area (with mileage reimbursed).
Must be able to lift produce boxes/bags weighing between 10-50 pounds each on a continuous basis.
Start Date & Work Schedule This position is expected to begin in early October 2025.
The anticipated work schedule will be Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm EDT (occasional weekend activities may apply).
This is a hybrid-remote position. The Program Coordinator will work part of the time remotely from home, or another designated location, and part of the time at partner sites or office locations. This position requires occasional “in-office” presence for team meetings and events.
Compensation $50,000-$53,000 annual salary.
