About us
Based in Berkeley, CA, UPSIDE Foods grows meat, poultry, and seafood directly from real animal cells. These products are not vegan or vegetarian — they are delicious meat, made without the need to raise and slaughter billions of animals. UPSIDE Foods aims to address environmental, animal welfare, and public health challenges while delivering the meat people love. Founded as the world's first cultivated meat company in 2015, UPSIDE Foods (formerly Memphis Meats) has achieved industry-defining milestones, including producing multiple species of meat and selling a cultivated meat product in the United States. The company believes people shouldn't have to choose between the foods they love and a thriving planet, and is building a better food system with accessible, humane, and sustainable meat, poultry, and seafood. UPSIDE Foods has received industry awards and has raised a total of $608 million from a diverse group of investors. About this job:
We are seeking a Lead Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Operational Technology (OT) Architect to drive the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of intelligence systems and solutions that accelerate UPSIDE's cultivated meat R&D and manufacturing. This principal-level role reports to the Head of Enterprise Intelligence & Operations and works with a team of data software, data science, and IT professionals. Join us to invent AI that will help feed the planet sustainably – and earn meaningful equity in a company poised to transform a trillion-dollar industry. Responsibilities
Steer the AI technical roadmap : You will be UPSIDE's senior technical expert on AI, partnering with leadership to set company-wide AI strategy. Develop deep POVs on where AI can add value, select applications for machine-learning models and large-language models, and decide between build, buy, or partner options. Ensure the roadmap balances quick and long-term value and risk vs. reward. You will have authority to design and ship high-value solutions. Build Data as a Product : AI value relies on data foundation (millions of datapoints per day and growing). Articulate data value from insights across science, technology, data, and IT. Prioritize data needs, enable teams to learn faster, and champion data improvements that accelerate breakthroughs from months to weeks. Activate Smart Operational Technology : Our manufacturing and lab environments include systems from Industrial Control Systems to Quality systems to bioreactor controls and sensors. Ensure OT and IT systems provide the right data to power AI/ML solutions. Architect data ingestion and processing for sensors and troubleshoot data pipelines between manufacturing and lab data streams. Architect AI/ML solutions for a new industry : Translate ideas and pain-points into architecture diagrams for intelligence products. Decide between models and methods, design solutions that scale, and prototype rapidly to test a point of view. Own the E2E Development : Lead from concept to prototype, work with teams to co-develop, and establish best practices for AI systems (code quality, MLOps, synthetic data, data governance). Drive production deployments and ensure ongoing maintenance and support as part of the intelligence platform. About You
Ideal is a Masters Degree or PhD (in computer science, data science, computational biology, or any AI/ML-heavy role). An undergraduate degree is acceptable with strong on-the-job AI/ML experience. Hybrid AI+OT track record (10+ years): Hands-on delivery of at least five production AI/ML solutions drawing from plant-floor or lab OT systems, with measurable business impact. AI/ML experience may come from academia or consulting. Systems and coding expertise: Python, modern ML/DL frameworks, and cloud (AWS/GCP). Ability to design modular, scalable services and data pipelines. Bonus for experience in heterogeneous data pipeline management or ETL skills. MLOps & model governance: Experience with version control, CI/CD for ML, model registry, monitoring, and synthetic-data or data-quality practices in regulated environments. Startup execution & frugality: Ability to ship production AI in resource-constrained settings with solid engineering practice. Domain awareness: Familiar with sensors, historians (e.g., OSIsoft PI), MES/LIMS, and GMP or other regulated manufacturing; biotech/pharma experience is a plus. Product-centric collaborator: Able to translate science/engineering needs into road-mapped solutions and communicate value to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with AI/ML certificates, MES/SCADA systems, or cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, SageMaker) is welcome. Compensation Range : $210,000 - $250,000* Pay may vary depending on factors including job-related knowledge and skills. UPSIDE Benefits!
