The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced and motivated Synthetic Chemist in our new self-driving lab in Boston, which is poised to revolutionize the R&D landscape and set new standards. Focused on small molecule synthesis, automation and artificial intelligence (machine learning) for chemistry, this cutting-edge lab will be fully automated and integrated with Atinary’s no-code AI platform, –SDLabs– to drive autonomous experimentation, allowing us to push the boundaries of chemical innovation.

As an Atinary Scientist, you will play a crucial role in the success of the Atinary Lab, contributing your expertise to design, execute, and optimize synthetic pathways for small molecules, leveraging automation and AI tools to successfully execute the vision of Self-driving LabsTM, that is, AI-driven and fully automated labs that revolutionize the R&D and discovery processes.

You will also collaborate with Atinary’s multi-disciplinary team across multiple locations, including California and Lausanne, Switzerland. Your innovative approach and technical acumen will be key to unlocking new possibilities in accelerated synthetic chemistry and advancing Atinary’s mission to transform chemical innovation with its Self-driving Labs technology.

The ideal candidate will bring lab expertise in robotics, automation, hands-on experience with high-throughput platforms (HTE), and a strong background in synthetic chemistry or chemical engineering.

Responsibilities

Design & Optimization of Synthetic Routes: Develop, refine, and implement efficient, reproducible, and scalable synthetic pathways for small molecules.

Integration of Automation and AI: Collaborate with engineers and software teams to seamlessly integrate lab automation and Atinary’s SDLabs AI tools into experimental workflows.

Experimental Execution & Troubleshooting: Conduct hands-on synthesis, monitor reaction progress, and adeptly troubleshoot experimental challenges to ensure high throughput and reliability.

Data Analysis & Interpretation: Analyze experimental outcomes using computational and AI-assisted platforms to extract critical insights and guide future iterations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Actively engage with multidisciplinary teams across Boston, California, and Lausanne to share findings, align priorities, and contribute to overall lab progress.

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Maintain meticulous lab records, contribute to scientific reporting, and foster knowledge sharing within and beyond the lab.

Continuous Innovation: Stay abreast of advances in synthetic methodologies and autonomous R&D, proposing new strategies and enhancements.

Safety & Compliance: Uphold the highest lab safety standards and ensure all processes comply with relevant regulatory and environmental guidelines.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related pharmaceutical science with 8+ years of hands-on industry experience; OR

Master’s degree in Chemistry (ideally Organic Chemistry), Medicinal Chemistry, or a related pharmaceutical science with 6+ years of relevant industry experience; OR

Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related pharmaceutical science with 2+ years of relevant industry experience.

Synthetic Chemistry Expertise: Strong expertise in organic synthesis with proven experience in designing and optimizing synthetic routes.

Analytical Techniques: Expertise with analytical techniques such as HPLC, NMR, and Agilent OpenLab is essential.

Lab Automation: Demonstrated 4+ years of experience with lab automation, particularly in the design and implementation of automated systems such as Unchained Labs, Chemspeed, Tecan, Hamilton, or similar platforms.

Reaction Optimization: Experience in parallel optimization of reaction conditions.

Automation Translation: Proven ability to translate scientific processes to automation platforms and identify new application areas.

Troubleshooting: Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems in analytical and automated platforms.

Software Proficiency: Familiarity with orchestration software (e.g., OpenLab, LabX, ACDLabs, Revvity), databases, Excel, JMP, and Word. High-level competency with instrument software like OpenLab.

AI Integration: Ability to work with AI-driven software platforms or a strong interest in learning how to integrate AI insights into experimental planning.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in data analytics and programming (R, Python, Tableau, SQL, JMP, etc.) or a strong interest in developing these skills.

Experience with ELNs and relational databases.

Experience with ACD-Labs and scheduling software like GBG.

Collaboration: Proven ability to successfully collaborate within an interdisciplinary scientific team of engineers, data scientists, and AI/ML experts.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, adjust communication style for the audience, and provide timely, effective communication to supervisors. Strong technical writing skills for internal documentation.

Organization: Excellent time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Knowledge Sharing: Ability to capture organizational knowledge, improve solutions and processes through information utilization, and contribute experience, theories, and models for others’ use.

Technical Acumen: Subject matter expertise and in-depth knowledge of applicable lab equipment and operations.

Language: Proficient in English.

Attitude: Possesses a “can-do” attitude and is a proactive problem-solver.
