Overview
MedStar Health is looking for a Patient Care Technician to join our team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center Cardiac Intermediate Unit. As a Patient Care Technician, you will function as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. You will assist nursing and medical staff with procedures and tests, and assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). You may perform specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record.
Responsibilities
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene (bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, range of motion).
Assist with patient mobilization and rehabilitation, use of crutches and walkers, and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
Collect specimens; perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtain EKGs; apply electrodes and initiate physiologic monitoring equipment; insert and manage IV catheters and IV site dressings; inspect IV sites.
Measure and document intake and output; accurately record vital signs, height/weight, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care or waived testing results in the health record.
Perform routine treatments and activities per unit/hospital policy (e.g., Foley catheter insertion/removal and care; suctioning; simple dressing changes and wound care; turning/positioning; postmortem care and body transport to the morgue).
Maintain drainage tubes and equipment care (including oxygen equipment); assist with traction, casts, splints, slings, and immobilization devices as applicable.
Support patient comfort, confidentiality, and dignity; perform patient observation (including 1:1 when required) and assist with provider examinations and procedures.
Routinely round on assigned patients; report actual and potential problems to the registered nurse and care team; ensure complete handoff at shift change.
Initiate and assist in CPR; participate in patient/family teaching and respond to questions from patients and families.
Attend staff meetings and contribute to multidisciplinary quality and service improvement efforts; assist with environmental services tasks and patient room sanitation; transport patients for discharge or appointments; complete errands such as delivering specimens and stocking supplies.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program with active CNA certification, or equivalent experience (e.g., Nursing Student in RN program with at least one year of clinical rotation, or graduate of an approved nursing program [LPN/RN]); or completion of an EMT/Paramedic program with at least six months of experience as EMT/CCT/EMTP.
BLS - Basic Life Support certification.
This position has a hiring range of $19.927 - $29.982.
