Senior Technical Transportation Engineer

with

experience in Highway design

to join our Civil Engineering group in the Mid-Atlantic District. The candidate may be located in Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Herndon, VA; Baltimore, MD; Virginia Beach, VA; or Richmond, VA. The ideal candidate should have experience in highway design, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional or alternative delivery projects. Responsibilities include design, plan production, and project management support. The candidate will have a comprehensive range of roadway design experience related to transportation infrastructure projects, including geometric design, complete streets, temporary traffic control, and highway design. This role is a key contributor in assisting daily activities and mentoring the transportation team. Primary duties center on supporting flagship infrastructure programs across transportation, transit, site, and environmental sectors. Ideal candidates would lead technical design programs, facilitate client engagement sessions, reinforce internal design standards, and identify future contract opportunities. The candidate will partner with the senior team to grow technical expertise across the region. The role requires technical leadership for multi-site/heavy civil programs including site layout, roadway, MOT, grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, and erosion & sediment control across public and private sectors. Your Impact Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients per deliverable milestones. Approve and sign-off on work. Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda. Lead and manage large-scale heavy civil projects, including budgeting, monitoring hours and expenses, supervising subcontractors and employees, and ensuring satisfactory performance. Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, contracts, and inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and sound engineering practice. Meet with public or private entities to discuss engineering/construction challenges and programs. Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations to address engineering or construction issues or opportunities. Develop a client base for high-level civil engineering services, including identifying additional business development opportunities. Mentor staff to support growth and professional development. Provide oversight in collecting and analyzing data from sites, surveys, GIS data, subsurface utilities, hydrologic and geotechnical data for project development, design, and construction. Apply high-level civil engineering techniques to improve various project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation. Perform professional civil engineering work and investigations of site conditions to determine conformance with rules, standards, and permits. Involve from project inception to completion in design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, pavement design, and construction safety plans. Oversee development and implementation of advanced technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems. Coordinate work within the team, lead projects, and be on-site for client meetings and mentoring staff. Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices. Collaborate with professionals from various disciplines and authorities on funded projects, including proposal and business development opportunities. Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline. 10+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design. P.E. license required (multi-state preferred). Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, design, and permitting processes. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; involvement in rehabilitation, reconstruction, new design, and construction projects. Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specifications. Experience with inspections and investigations related to construction and design of facilities or structures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership and ability to guide mid-level to senior team members with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with technical writing, office software, and design tools (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS). Experience delivering technical deliverables and plans with complex requirements. Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and decision-making abilities. Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Commitment to workplace safety and to WSP policies on health, safety, and harassment. Flexibility in schedules and ability to adapt to changing priorities; occasional travel may be required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering. Compensation for all locations: $111,200.00 - $198,300.00. WSP USA reserves the right to adjust compensation based on qualifications and geographic location.
