Overview
The Juilliard School was founded in 1905 and is a world leader in performing arts education. The school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens. Juilliard is located at Lincoln Center in New York City and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, drama (acting and playwriting), and music (classical, jazz, historical performance, and vocal arts). More than 800 artists from 42 states and 50 countries and regions are enrolled in Juilliard’s College Division, with extensive performance activity in the school’s five theaters, at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and other local, national, and global venues. The continuum of learning also includes nearly 400 students in the Preparatory Division, including the tuition-free Music Advancement Program (MAP). Juilliard Extension enrolls more than 1,200 students in continuing education programs taught in person and remotely. Juilliard has a global reach through a K-12 educational curriculum and preparatory and graduate studies at The Tianjin Juilliard School in China. Reporting to the President, the Vice President and Chief Development Officer (VP/CDO) will join at a pivotal moment in the school’s history and will work with a dedicated leadership team and an engaged Board of Trustees. The VP/CDO will serve as a key advisor on philanthropy and will create and implement strategies to ensure Juilliard’s continued success and expanded impact through increased philanthropic support. The VP/CDO oversees a team of 24, including 7 direct reports. This is a role for an entrepreneurial leader who brings intelligence, credibility, connectivity, and a genuine belief in the transformative power of art to change the world. Candidate Qualifications/Requirements
The Juilliard School’s next Vice President and Chief Development Officer will be an established, senior executive with a track record of successful leadership in both campaigns and increasing unrestricted annual operating funds. They will bring a deep appreciation for Juilliard’s history, achievements, and aspirations, and the ability to articulate the President’s vision to a wide range of audiences. The VP will be a strategist who can translate big-picture vision into tactics and outcomes, with a demonstrated ability to build and lead a development program in higher education, performing arts, or similar not-for-profit settings. The candidate will have a strong history of initiative in capital campaigns and frontline major gift solicitations, and knowledge of capital/endowment campaign planning and execution. They will show willingness to experiment with new approaches to resource development and share knowledge of best practices in the development field. The VP will have board relations experience in a major institution and relationship-management experience to engage with the President, Trustees, faculty, administrators, alumni, donors, and other stakeholders. The VP will serve as a highly visible ambassador for the school, consistently representing its professionalism and excellence. A genuine passion for and understanding of the transformative power of art, and the ability to communicate this to prospects and donors, is crucial, as is the ability to engage in meaningful conversations about the importance of the performing arts. The VP will also be: a trustworthy partner and cross-functional collaborator strong executive presence, discretion, and emotional intelligence knowledgeable about the New York City, national, and ideally global philanthropic and cultural communities an excellent communicator and presenter with polished writing and editing skills well-versed in budget preparation, monitoring, and administration able and willing to travel and attend evening and weekend events and performances a bachelor’s degree recipient: an advanced degree is a plus The compensation range for this role is $425,000-$475,000, commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
