Overview

Physician Assistant Outpatient Thoracic Surgery — Under the general supervision of a physician, the PA provides varied medical services including obtaining medical history and performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medications; counseling patients and families; and other patient care duties as appropriate and compliant with applicable law and hospital policies. Responsibilities

Assisting in MD thoracic surgery clinics Managing independent PA clinics for pre- and post-operative patients Organizing and assisting in tumor board discussions Communicating with patients through MyChart Coordinating care with administrative staff via In-Basket messages Performing and interpreting routine diagnostic studies, including routine laboratory procedures, common radiologic studies, and electrocardiograph tracings Acting as liaison with patient’s primary care, attending, or referring physicians to deliver continuing care Facilitating communication with other departments to ensure cost-effective and efficient patient care Educating patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and prescribed treatments and medications Recording and maintaining legible, accurate, and confidential patient medical records Authorized to write prescription orders, including those for narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs, and pre- and postoperative orders as necessary Ensuring treatments and consultations comply with NCQA, The Joint Commission (TJC), and federal/state regulatory standards Attending weekly staff meetings Maintaining professional growth and knowledge through education and workshops Maintaining patient confidentiality Conforming to hospital standards of performance and patient rights to provide high-quality care Aligning decision making with the hospital’s cultural beliefs and mission Following established hospital infection control and safety procedures Performs other duties as required Education

Bachelor’s degree in any field (scientific field preferred) and graduation from an American Medical Association (AMA) approved Physician Assistant Program Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required

Nationally Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts If prescribing medications as part of clinical duties, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA registration are required Experience

Prior experience is preferred; new graduates are welcome to apply Knowledge and Skills
