Physician Assistant responsible for providing complete independent workup of all orthopedic conditions in an outpatient setting. Preferred experience includes spine, joints, hand, sports, and trauma related conditions.
Position Summary Under the general supervision of the Chief Physician Assistant, Attending physician and Operations Director, the Physician Assistant is responsible for providing varied medical services, including initial and follow‑up evaluation of orthopedic related complaints; formulation of a diagnosis and treatment plan; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic studies; prescribing or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or invasive procedures; rounding on admitted patients; counseling patients and families; performing pre‑operative and other patient care duties. The Physician Assistant may also be involved in a patient’s medical care in any capacity deemed proper by the attending physician.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Provides direct care, counseling and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative and/or procedure setting.
Perform comprehensive and problem‑focused history and physical examination, interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures; formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis; formulate a management plan for orthopedic problems within scope of practice; implement therapeutic intervention when appropriate; exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising orthopedic surgeon or other health‑care professionals.
Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures and studies including blood and tissue specimens, EMG, electrocardiogram, compartment pressure measurements, special x‑rays, CT, MRI, bone scans, etc.
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as bracing, cast and splint applications.
Present and discuss findings of the initial evaluation with the Attending Physician to determine the treatment plan; document the treatment plan and write appropriate orders and referrals.
Oversee the entire clinical experience to assure coordination and consolidation of patient care plans and execution of those plans to tie the service together; facilitate communication with other departments to ensure delivery of excellent, cost‑effective, and efficient patient care.
Under the countersignature of the attending physician, produce preoperative and postoperative orders, as authorized by applicable law and department protocol.
Write orders on patients admitted to the hospital, including medication, labs, diagnostic and therapeutic tests, and nursing activities; may be authorized to write appropriate prescription orders, including narcotics, stimulants, depressant drugs, investigational medications, and pre‑ and postoperative orders as necessary.
Makes rounds to evaluate patients and writes progress reports.
Educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments, injections, procedures and/or medications.
Records and maintains legible, accurate and confidential patient medical records, including initial evaluation, subsequent follow‑up, unusual incidents or events, and patient progress to provide complete and up‑to‑date information.
Provides pre‑operative services including Pre‑op H & P and SAFE protocol clearances.
Participates in hospital level activities representing the department.
Facilitates transitions of care from inpatient to outpatient setting, including medication reconciliation, arrangements for appropriate and timely follow up, and completion of accurate discharge summaries.
Facilitates direct admission process as needed.
Provides faculty support by monitoring all incoming patient requests including phone calls, MyChart messages and other patient‑related paperwork or correspondence.
Assists in surgery, including first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances, and other actions delegated by the surgeon; conducts hospital rounds, writes orders, responds to patient‑related calls for the orthopedic surgeon; evaluates and clarifies clinical conditions, formulates and implements treatment or therapeutic plans; constructs H & P and discharge summaries; provides general wound vac set‑up, placement, and monitoring; supports in‑clinic casting‑splinting as needed.
In addition to providing direct clinical support to surgeons, holds independent clinical sessions as needed.
Ensures treatment and consultations consistent with NCQA, TJC and federal/state regulatory standards.
Engages in inpatient orthopedic care including discharge planning, patient rounding/monitoring, and bedside procedures.
Works closely with social work / case management partners to develop discharge strategies to support post‑surgical home care.
Attends scheduled weekly staff meetings, monthly grand rounds, and daily departmental huddles.
Assists with research projects and their implementation as needed.
Orders, prescribes, dispenses, and administers medication, orthosis, orthotics, braces and other orthopedic devices (durable medical equipment) as permitted by state legislation.
Ensures professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, workshops, and maintaining knowledge of industry standards.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights, to deliver best possible customer service and patient care.
Adheres to BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards and utilizes hospital cultural beliefs as foundation for decision making and supporting hospital mission and goals.
Follows established infection control and safety procedures.
Performs other duties related to patient care and practice operations as required.
Education Qualified Physician Assistants hold at least a Master’s degree and must be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC‑PA) or its predecessor.
Job Requirements In order to apply, the PA must be National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligible and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts. Documentation of Massachusetts PA license, initial NCCPA certification, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required upon hire.
Experience Spine experience preferred.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English; able to convey complex medical information to patients, families, physicians, staff and community health workers.

Compensation Range $104,000.00 – $151,000.00 (estimate based on the minimum job qualifications). Base pay is determined by education, experience, skills, certifications and organizational factors.
