Overview As a Senior Network/Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining the design, management and integrity of the Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation's internal Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) network/systems, including customer-facing hosted and cloud environments.

Responsibilities

Provide expert technical assistance to team members with high-level systems and networking requests.

Design, implement and test integrated/complex infrastructure in support of business customers’ needs.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the reliability, security, performance, and cost-efficiency of on-premises and cloud environments.

Provide onsite and remote support on a 24x7 basis to business customers with critical response time requirements for their technology systems.

Work independently and as part of a team to answer service desk calls, analyze technical issues, address escalated issues, coordinate with the project manager on team projects, and troubleshoot over the phone, onsite, or via remote access.

Maintain flexible work hours to support systems deployment and troubleshooting activities.

Demonstrate skills required to secure and manage network and integrated system infrastructures to protect productivity, mitigate threats, and reduce costs.

General duties and responsibilities

Support, implement, and integrate Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) network, including design, installation and support of routing, switching, firewalls, load balancing, systems integration, and security/VPN technologies in ITS WAN/LAN environments.

Design robust, scalable, secure, and highly available on-premises and cloud architectures for new applications, migrations, and existing systems, defining infrastructure, platform, and software services.

Develop and champion a comprehensive private or cloud strategy and roadmap that supports business objectives, considering public, private, and hybrid cloud models (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).

Develop and maintain detailed architectural diagrams, technical documentation, and establish cloud governance policies and best practices.

Assist with Windows and Linux servers, Datacenter VMware technologies, storage infrastructure and data domain.

Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to ensure alignment and clear communication of technical concepts and architectural decisions.

Monitor and manage tools and processes to ensure system and team performance.

Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation to enhance performance.

Ensure systems are supported efficiently with minimal disruptions and downtime in line with SLAs.

Track and report metrics to show compliance with established SLAs.

Participate in planning and implementation of future network/traffic/SCADA equipment installations and capacity planning.

Engage in high-level analysis and troubleshooting of systems infrastructure.

Provide technical leadership to other team members.

Perform research and analysis for problem resolution.

Perform other related duties as requested by your manager.

Qualifications

Experience as a Network/Systems Engineer familiar with networking best practices.

Experience with Cisco switches, routers and firewall best practices.

Thorough knowledge of networking and systems infrastructure concepts and best practices.

Proven experience designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and integrating complex networks and systems.

Expert knowledge of routing protocols (e.g., EIGRP, OSPF, RIP, BGP) in a mixed environment.

Experience with the MODBUS communications protocol.

Knowledge of AIOPS and observability tools and Cisco DNAC and system monitoring/management tools.

Experience with security technologies including ACLs, firewalls, VPNs, Wi-Fi/enterprise wireless, Citrix NetScaler, and related technologies.

Knowledge of T1, T3, SONET, SD-WAN, DWDM technologies.

Experience in installing and configuring physical and virtual switches in VMware environments, backend storage systems and fiber channel zoning.

Ability to adapt to changing situations to meet emergencies or production requirements.

Undergraduate degree (BS) in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.

Relevant technical certifications (e.g., CCIE, CCNP, AWS, Azure).

Experience creating and updating Network/Systems Visio diagrams.

Qualifications acquired on the job

Knowledge of policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.

Knowledge of agency forms and operating practices.

Minimum requirements

At least eight years of full-time (or equivalent) professional experience in network/cloud design and engineering.

Experience in network/cloud design engineering and systems integration.

Systems engineering in ITS-related technologies with a strong background in ITS applications, network/cloud architecture, server administration, and desktop management.

Solid background in communications protocols.

Other requirements

Normal office working conditions.

Must carry a mobile phone.

Ability to lift/move objects up to approximately 40 lbs.

Ability to work at various Authority field locations.

Provide primary and/or secondary 24x7 on-call support for ITS applications.
