Primary Function of Organizational Unit Research at BRITE focuses on translational research in biomanufacturing and drug discovery. BRITE owns a 475,000 compound library—the largest academic collection in the USA. BRITE serves approximately 200 students annually and is the major research arm of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Primary Purpose of Position The Division of Academic Affairs seeks a Director for BRITE to provide leadership and supervision of the unit. The Director reports to the Associate Provost/Dean for Research and Sponsored Programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities The candidate will have a record of leading translational research in drug discovery, proven organizational management, ability to set goals and priorities, and manage performance. Requirements include:
Academic experience with a successful record of obtaining external funding and a minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.
Ability to attract and lead federal/state and private funding; experience with center grants, educational grants, or academic development grants is desired.
Ability to implement processes to accomplish objectives, organize people and resources, and measure progress.
Industry experience with a record of project leadership and understanding of drug discovery and development from target to clinical trials.
Track record of innovation, publications, and patents; ability to initiate and manage internal and external collaborations; engage key opinion leaders.
Strong interpersonal, leadership, and collaboration skills in a matrix environment; excellent verbal and written communication; high ethical standards; passion for research, teaching, student learning, and student success.
Minimum Education/Experience The Director is expected to have an earned Ph.D. (or M.D. or PharmD) in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or a related field with an in-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical industry or BRITE. It is expected that the incumbent will qualify for tenure as a full professor.

Primary Responsibilities And Duties
Lead a team of 25 scientists (34 total staff) in drug discovery and translational research across cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and broad-spectrum antivirals; oversee undergraduate and graduate student training.
Manage the yearly state budget with support from the Associate Director and State budget finance staff; foster growth of the research operation to increase funding.
Oversee research performance and development of faculty and staff; collaborate with NCCU’s BBRI and Deans to form synergies and sustainable collaborations; support student recruitment, scholarships, mentoring, internships, leadership, and K-12 outreach.
Coordinate fundraising with Institutional Advancement, NCCU Foundation, and BRITE development lead; represent BRITE with external partners and workforce-development initiatives; assess external business alliances and out-licensing opportunities; participate in workforce development, boards, and fundraising opportunities; engage in teaching and mentoring; interact with officials to promote the program.
