North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a historically Black university in Durham, North Carolina. The university seeks a Director of Bar Preparation to develop and implement a comprehensive bar preparation program for students and alumni from admission through bar passage. The Director is responsible for academic counseling, planning and presenting academic skills workshops, and coaching alumni who are studying for the bar exam. Primary Functions of Organizational Unit

The School of Law aims to provide an education and a voice to the underserved. It seeks to maximize the potential of students from populations underrepresented in the legal field. Key Responsibilities and Duties

Implement, evaluate and enhance the School of Law’s bar preparation program, including organizing summer and winter programs, reviewing student submissions and providing feedback. Expand programs by providing a repository of bar preparation materials, collaborating with commercial bar preparation companies, coordinating a mentor program for graduates, tracking at-risk students, and supporting repeat bar takers. Track outcomes of the School of Law’s bar examination applicants. Collaborate with the Academic Support Unit and serve as an ex officio member of the Bar Enhancement and Retention Committee and the Academic Outcomes Committee to identify and assist students at risk. Develop and implement new components of the bar preparation program in collaboration with faculty and administration. Instructional Responsibilities

Work with individual students to develop and execute customized study plans for passing the bar exam. Provide individual and group feedback to enhance writing and analytical skills. Mentor and counsel students and graduates from law school through post-bar exam. Teach sections of the School of Law’s bar preparation courses. Provide supplementary bar preparation workshops. Research

Research and develop innovative programs using research and statistical information to increase bar passage rates. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical and public speaking skills. Ability to develop and manage higher education programs. Knowledge of academic programs pertaining to law school students. Knowledge of research and statistical analysis. Ability to work independently with initiative. Ability to relate to students, faculty, University personnel, and external constituents. Ability to follow through. Minimum Education/Experience

Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited institution. Member in good standing with a state bar, preferably the North Carolina State Bar. Outstanding law school academic record. One-year experience working with bar preparation programs. Experience in course development and delivery. Licenses or Certification

Collaborate with faculty and administration to develop and implement new components of the bar preparation program.
