Overview
Hospital is looking for at least 3 full-time providers to provide 24-hour coverage. Onsite shift coverage will be Monday–Friday 8am–5pm. Call coverage 5pm–8am Monday–Friday. Weekend call starting at 5pm and ending Monday at 8am. Responsibilities
Provide on-call GI coverage according to the schedule and described criteria. Intervene or oversee care for conditions within the specialty (e.g., gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis, post-surgical GI complications) as needed. Not required to oversee routine care provided by non-GI specialists unless the patient is involved in the listed situations. Collaborate with other ED or hospital teams as GI needs arise, including emergent procedures when required. Situations Requiring On-Call Locum GI Physician
Endoscopic procedures: emergent GI procedures (e.g., endoscopy, colonoscopy) required for a patient in critical condition. Gastrointestinal bleeding requiring urgent intervention. Obstructions/Perforations: suspected or confirmed bowel obstructions or perforations needing immediate evaluation and management. Consultations: calls from the Emergency Department (ED), other medical teams, or specialists needing GI expertise (e.g., pancreatitis, liver failure, other GI emergencies). Post-operative complications: management of post-operative GI issues (e.g., leaks, infections) following surgery (e.g., bariatric surgery, colectomy). Documentation of Call Back Hours
Physicians are required to log call back hours on their timesheets with detailed notes on the reason for the callback, verifiable via the electronic health record (EHR) audit. Telephone consultations and medical record reviews are not counted as onsite call back hours. Accepted Call Back Situations
Consultation for Gastrointestinal Bleeding: less than 90 minutes. Endoscopic Procedure (e.g., EGD, colonoscopy): approximately 1–2 hours. Management of GI Obstruction/Perforation: up to 2 hours. Post-Operative Care for GI Patients: generally under 3 hours, with variation based on severity. Additional Notes
