Position : Per Diem Dermatology Technician III – provides supportive patient care functions for Dermatology and other assigned clinical areas, under the supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients and families according to legal, organizational, and professional standards. Some duties may be delegated to the Sr. Dermatology Technician by the physician or RN. This position will serve as the primary support for an assigned Dermatologist. The Technician will perform additional duties including scribing and medical terminology to assist in documentation during Dermatology office visits and/or procedures. The technician may also be asked to scribe for physicians and to administer injectables and/or other advanced procedures (e.g., phototherapy/excimer laser treatment, setup/assist with procedures, sterile field management, suture removal, isotretinoin patient education/registration in iPledge, patch testing, instrument sterilization, and managing pathology logs). Primary Responsibilities
Scribe
Under the direct supervision of the RN Supervisor or Coordinator, perform real-time charting for physicians. Facilitate patient flow in ambulatory clinics and ensure an accurate and complete medical record for each patient. Ensure accurate documentation and proper spelling of Dermatology terminology. Prepare and assemble medical record documentation/chart for physician prior to and during patient visits; ensure documentation is accurate and timely. Accompany medical providers during history-taking and exams; record histories, chief complaints, transcribe exams, procedures, treatments, and follow-up plans.
Patient Care
Monitor in-basket for physician orders; perform tasks such as waived testing, EKGs, specimen collection, spirometry, hearing/vision tests; document patient responses. Document observations related to health status and report findings. Room patients on arrival and collect demographics, chief complaint, allergies, and vitals per policy; reconcile medications and update preferred pharmacy; document patient education and interpreter needs; complete applicable questionnaires (e.g., lead, TB, flu, new patient intake).
Prepares patient and room for physician visit
Assist with preparing patient for examination and minor procedures. Perform activities of daily living as needed (e.g., ostomy care, diaper changes). Transport patients within the facility as needed. Perform/obtain EKG, waived testing, hearing/vision testing, instrument sterilization, and collect Lab specimens; prepare specimens for lab. Perform CPR as needed and assist during emergencies.
Clerical
Review doctor’s schedule, abstract information as needed, print patient visit materials, prepare documents for scanning, monitor in-basket; assist with overdue results/letters. Schedule appointments and assist with referrals and radiology testing; provide patient education materials; ensure confidential handling of patient information per HIPAA.
Department Maintenance
Monitor supplies, medications, and forms; notify staff when reordering is needed. Remove and tag broken equipment; clean exam rooms daily; restock supplies; perform sterilization of instruments and maintain logs. Attend staff meetings and maintain a clean, organized work area.
QA-Regulatory
Complete daily logs (CLIA waived tests, refrigerator/mroom temp logs, eye wash, etc.); maintain legal, ethical documentation and patient confidentiality; follow OSHA safety standards; use PPE; verify equipment PM status; identify barriers to safe patient care.
Customer Service
Provide excellent patient care and customer service; demonstrate respect within the healthcare team; support efficiency and effectiveness; align with Kelsey-Seybold Mission and Values; maintain 90%+ customer service excellence; ensure age-appropriate interactions; handle telephone communications professionally.
Special Modules
Dermatology: provide safe and effective care to support dermatology providers’ practices; perform tasks such as lidocaine draws, IM injections (DTP/flu), apply dressings, remove sutures, document procedures, access RN as needed. Add-ons (Kenalog): prepare and administer IM Kenalog (40 mg), explain procedures, document administration, access RN as needed.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program; completion of department-specific Medical Assistant modules. BLS Certification through American Heart Association. 8+ years of directly related experience as a Medical Assistant with certification/registration as a Medical Assistant and Dermatology Medical Assistant Certification OR 9+ years of directly related experience as a Medical Assistant with no certification/registration and Dermatology Medical Assistant Certification. Completion of review/skill validation within 90 days of hire. Basic medical and nursing terminology; demonstrated ability to use equipment for the patient population; computer experience. Preferred Qualifications
1+ year of experience in the department or related specialty. Ambulatory care experience, EPIC experience, Windows-based computer skills. Pay is based on factors including local labor markets, education, experience, and certifications. In addition to salary, benefits include a comprehensive benefits package, incentive/recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and 401(k) contribution (eligibility applies). The hourly pay range for this role is $17.74 to $31.63 per hour for full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
