Overview
Boston Medical Center (BMC) has an immediate opportunity for an experienced perfusionist to join our evolving and expanding cardiac surgery service. The BMC cardiac surgical caseload is diverse and challenging, serving the most vulnerable residents of greater Boston as part of New England’s largest safety-net hospital. Candidates must be ABCP certified and eligible for licensure in the state of Massachusetts at the time of employment. Position: Clinical Perfusionist Department: Cardiothoracic Perfusion Schedule: Full Time Responsibilities
Provides extracorporeal support to a broad patient population under the direct order of an attending cardiac surgeon, following BMC policies and industry best practices. Reviews the patient’s medical record and documents all appropriate medical and laboratory information. Prepares equipment and disposables for extracorporeal support according to BMC policies, including selection, handling and priming of CPB components. Assembles intraoperative autologous transfusion (IAT) equipment and understands its integration with surgical procedures. Oversees safe operation and monitoring of the heart-lung machine and related CPB technologies. Applies concepts of myocardial protection during CPB and manages renal function, hemoconcentration, and related physiologic parameters clinically. Performs administration of blood products and pharmacologic agents to maintain anticoagulation, electrolyte balance and renal function per orders and policies. Interprets laboratory assays relevant to CPB and ECMO management; manages anticoagulation targets and ACT in collaboration with clinicians. Oversees ECMO equipment for VA and VV support; calculates extracorporeal blood flow and arterial pressure goals; adjusts sweep and FiO2 during CPB and ECMO as needed. Regulates patient temperature and fluid management; maintains ventricle assist devices (LVAD) and other long-term extracorporeal equipment when applicable. Maintains infection control and safety procedures; participates in maintenance and disposal of perfusion equipment; contributes to data collection for departmental studies. Participates in mandatory in-service sessions and departmental meetings; may present perfusion-related topics to staff. Supervises perfusion students during clinical rotations in accordance with ABCP guidelines. Ensures care is appropriate for adult and geriatric patients; notifies supervisor for patients outside standard practice and seeks specialized support as needed. Education
Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. Must have graduated from, or be currently enrolled in, an accredited Perfusion Education program, and anticipate graduation prior to hire date. Degree requirements may be waived for applicants previously certified by ABCP or admitted to the examination process before April 15, 1981. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
Certification in Cardiovascular Perfusion by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or eligible to take the examination. Massachusetts licensure as a Perfusionist (out-of-state licensees must obtain MA license within 90 days of employment; new grads within 18 months). CPR/BLS certification required. Experience
Cardiovascular Perfusionist experience in a fast-paced academic hospital is preferred. Knowledge And Skills
Basic knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Pathology and Mathematics. Knowledge of perfusion equipment and operation; familiarity with ventricular assist devices and clinical physiology relevant to perfusion. Ability to respond to unexpected events, especially in crisis situations where preparation time is critical. Excellent interpersonal skills for teamwork and collaboration with medical staff, nursing staff and other departments.
