Overview The University of Miami Department of Radiology has a full-time Mammography Technologist Level I position to work at Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami. The incumbent performs complex procedures in Mammography by operating radiographic equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images with the least amount of radiation exposure. Independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative are essential in addition to responsibility for designated areas, procedures and equipment.

Core Job Functions

Obtains and examines the order for a Mammography scan to be aware of information such as procedures requested, patient’s condition and any other special notes or comments.

Ensures that orders are appropriate to the type of exam recommended by the physician. Notifies supervisor of any discrepancies and/or contacts physician’s office for correct orders if necessary.

Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.

Verify the patient’s ID by checking their name and date of birth on electronic medical record and patient’s wristband.

Always obtain necessary consents and education.

Perform complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of Mammography scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures under the direction/supervision of a Radiologist using age appropriate standards of practice.

Ability to integrate diagnostic, laboratory results, patient history and medical records and adapt exam as necessary. Adheres to Mammography protocols to maintain high quality standards.

Consistently demonstrates competence in performing Mammography scans as ordered.

Assists positioning patients in required anatomical position for Mammography scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.

Maintain proper aseptic technique utilizing universal precaution guidelines (hand washing, gloves, gown, mask, eye protection and equipment disinfection).

Assist radiologist with imaging procedures, starting IVs, and injecting contrast, if applicable.

Assist radiologist with interventional Mammography procedures.

Loads and operates power injectors for contrast media administration.

Evaluate Mammography scans for technical quality, collate processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately label. Film/transmit to PACS.

Charge procedures and supplies in UChart/Radiant.

Maintain accurate patient records.

Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.

Applies physical age-specific and/or developmental care needs of patients according to their documented physical/development requirement by competency validation checklist: Children, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatric, Challenged/Disabled.

Performs basic nursing functions in the patient’s care, assists with bedpans, emesis basins, etc.; initiates life support measures if necessary; assists in “Code Blue” procedures during medical emergencies and performs CPR as needed.

Keeps work area in a clean and sanitary condition and stocks exam/dressing rooms with required supplies.

Reports unusual findings in a timely manner to appropriate Radiologist/Supervisory personnel.

Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.

Provide assistance with orientation and training of new Mammography technologists.

Provides education and training to student technologists.

Abide by hospital/department HR policies and regulatory guidelines (e.g., Joint Commission, AHCA, ACR, FL DOH, FDA/MQSA).

Assist with the day-to-day operations within the department.

Core Qualifications Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of accredited Radiologic Technology /Diagnostic Imaging Program.

Certification and Licensing:

State of Florida License as a General Radiographer. CPR and BLS certification required. ARRT registered and ARRT Certified in primary modality or must obtain certification within one (1) year of hire date. CPR and BLS certification required.

Experience:

One (1) year of relevant experience preferred; will consider new graduates from accredited schools.

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
